Chapter 2: The Name That Changed Everything
The dining room fell silent.
Heavy footsteps echoed through the hallway.
Then a man in a black suit entered, followed by six members of a corporate security team.
Every face in the room turned pale.
The lead officer stopped directly beside me and lowered his head.
"Good evening, Ms. Cassidy Hartwell."
Brendan frowned.
His mother looked confused.
Jessica laughed nervously.
"Who are these people?"
The officer ignored her.
He handed me a tablet.
"The board meeting has been called. Protocol 7 is active."
Diane scoffed.
"Board meeting? What board?"
I slowly stood up.
Water still dripped from my dress.
Then I looked at each of them.
"The board of Hartwell Global Holdings."
Nobody reacted.
The name meant nothing to them.
Until Brendan's face suddenly lost all color.
Hartwell Global.
The parent company.
The corporation that owned Morrison Financial.
The corporation where Brendan worked.
The corporation where Diane sat on two advisory committees.
The corporation that paid for the mansion they were sitting in.
Jessica blinked.
"Wait... that's impossible."
I gave a small smile.
"No. What's impossible is how long you all believed I was powerless."
Arthur appeared on the screen.
"The emergency vote has passed unanimously."
Diane laughed.
"You expect us to believe you're involved with Hartwell Global?"
Arthur looked directly into the camera.
"Mrs. Morrison, Cassidy Hartwell is not involved."
He paused.

"She owns fifty-one percent of the company."
The room exploded into silence.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Brendan stared at me as if he had never seen me before.
Because in that moment, he realized the truth.
The woman he had mocked for years wasn't dependent on his family.
His family depended on hers.
