Chapter 4: The Voice No One Expected

Principal Henderson hurried out of the classroom, nearly tripping over a student's backpack.

Mrs. Sharp watched him leave.

Her breathing became uneven.

Colonel Rob Hayes noticed.

"You've suddenly become nervous."

"I have nothing to hide."

"We'll see."

Five minutes later, the principal returned carrying the school's IT administrator and a portable hard drive.

"We found the recordings."

The administrator connected the drive to the laptop.

Unlike the ceiling security camera...

The document camera recorded both video and audio whenever motion was detected near the teacher's desk.

The recording began.

10:13:58 AM

Mrs. Sharp entered the empty classroom carrying her purse.

She looked around twice before opening her wallet.

She counted five one-hundred-dollar bills.

Then she placed them inside the top desk drawer instead of returning them to her purse.

Officer Martinez frowned.

"So the money never disappeared."

"Wait," Colonel Hayes said quietly.

"Keep playing."

Mrs. Sharp adjusted the papers on her desk.

Then she took out her cellphone.

She made a phone call.

The classroom speakers filled with her voice.

"Yes..."

"It's ready."

Everyone exchanged confused looks.

She continued speaking.

"No, she's here today."

"That little mechanic's daughter."

"If everything goes right, they'll pay before lunch."

Daniel felt Lily's fingers tighten around his hand.

Mrs. Sharp's recorded laughter echoed through the room.

"People like them are always afraid of police."

The recording continued.

A man's voice came through the phone.

It was distorted but understandable.

"If the father refuses?"

Mrs. Sharp smiled.

"He won't."

"I'll threaten Child Protective Services."

"If that doesn't work..."

"I'll make sure the girl is expelled."

The room became deathly quiet.

Officer Martinez slowly looked up.

"She planned this."

Officer Lewis nodded.

"Before Lily even entered the room."

Daniel couldn't believe what he was hearing.

His daughter had never been a suspect.

She had been selected.

The recording wasn't over.

The man on the phone laughed.

"Good."

"Send me my share tonight."

Every officer looked at each other.

Colonel Hayes immediately paused the video.

"Play that again."

The administrator replayed the last sentence.

"Send me my share tonight."

Officer Martinez spoke first.

"Share?"

Daniel frowned.

"Share of what?"

Rob answered quietly.

"Extortion."

Mrs. Sharp suddenly shouted.

"Turn it off!"

Nobody moved.

"I SAID TURN IT OFF!"

The IT administrator kept playing.

Mrs. Sharp slammed her cuffed hands onto the desk.

"You have no right!"

Colonel Hayes looked at her calmly.

"You lost the right to complain when you tried to destroy a child's life."

The audio continued.

Mrs. Sharp lowered her voice.

"I've done this before."

"Parents always pay."

"Poor ones panic the fastest."

Daniel felt sick.

Lily buried her face against his jacket.

The students stared at their teacher in horror.

One little girl whispered,

"My mom paid her last year..."

The entire classroom turned toward the child.

"What?"

The little girl hesitated.

Mrs. Sharp glared at her.

The child immediately looked down.

Colonel Hayes noticed.

"Sweetheart..."

"Tell us."

The girl swallowed hard.

"My mom gave Mrs. Sharp three hundred dollars."

"Why?"

"She said I broke a classroom tablet."

"Did you?"

The child shook her head.

"No."

"My mom cried all night."

Another student slowly raised his hand.

"My parents paid too."

Then another.

"And mine."

A boy near the window whispered,

"She said she'd call immigration on my uncle."

Within seconds...

Six students had raised their hands.

Each family had paid.

Each had been threatened.

Each had believed they had no choice.

Principal Henderson looked like he might faint.

"My God..."

Colonel Hayes slowly closed the laptop.

"This isn't a school discipline case anymore."

Officer Martinez nodded.

"This is organized fraud."

Mrs. Sharp's face had gone completely white.

Just then...

The classroom door opened.

A middle-aged detective entered carrying a folder.

"Colonel."

"We traced the phone number."

Rob looked up.

"And?"

"It belongs to someone already under investigation."

"Who?"

The detective opened the folder.

Every officer's expression changed.

"It belongs to Assistant Principal Gary Collins."

The room exploded with shocked whispers.

Principal Henderson staggered backward.

"Gary?"

"No..."

Mrs. Sharp closed her eyes.

For the first time...

She realized she had just implicated her own partner.

At that exact moment, footsteps echoed down the hallway.

Someone was running.

An officer's radio crackled.

"Suspect fleeing through the east entrance!"

Colonel Hayes looked toward the door.

"Collins knows."

Officer Martinez reached for his radio.

"Lock the school down!"

But it was already too late.

Outside the classroom windows...

They watched Assistant Principal Gary Collins sprint across the parking lot carrying a black briefcase.

And in his hand...

May you like

Was a thick envelope stuffed with cash.
