Chapter 1 - The Second Lens
The cold glare of the early morning light filtered through the heavy velvet drapes of the nursery, casting long, skeletal shadows across Leo’s bed. My mother, Beatrice, stood like an empress in her silk morning gown, her hand clamped around Mara’s wrist with white-knuckled fury. Beside her, my sister-in-law, Victoria, was already on her phone, her thumb hovering over the dial pad to call the police.
"I told you, Julian," Beatrice hissed, her voice dripping with triumph. "Hiring this street rat was madness. She’s a known thief, and now she’s stealing the very medication keeping your son alive."
"Look at this," Victoria chimed in, pointing a manicured finger at the metallic syringe that had rolled out from under Leo's breakfast napkin, resting against his faded teddy bear. "She was going to inject him with god knows what. She’s trying to kill him!"
Mara didn't flinch. Her wrist was held in Beatrice’s grip, but her dark eyes remained locked on me. She didn't look like a caught criminal; she looked like a soldier waiting for her commander to give the order.
"They weren't trying to rob you," Mara repeated, her voice low, steady, and devoid of fear. "They were trying to bury him. Look at the label on that vial, Julian. It’s not his standard cardiotonic."
I stepped forward, ignoring my mother’s gasps, and picked up the syringe. The label read Digoxin, Leo's prescribed heart regulator. But beneath the printed label, a tiny, faint blue stamp of a private laboratory in the industrial district was visible.
"Julian, don't touch that!" Beatrice snapped. "It's evidence! The nursery camera showed her swapping the vials at 2:13 a.m. We have all the proof we need to lock her away for good."
"You're right, Mother," I said, my voice completely flat. "The nursery camera did show that. The camera you installed."

I reached into my pocket and pulled out my tablet, unlocking the screen.
"But you didn't know about the second system," I said, turning the screen toward them. "The one built into the smoke detector. The one that records in 4K, with high-fidelity audio."
