Chapter 6 - The Liquidation of Assets

Marcus’s phone on the coffee table began to buzz, a frantic, continuous vibration that signaled a barrage of incoming notifications. He didn't look at it, his grip tightening on her arm. "Nice try. I’m not letting you go."

"Answer it," Danielle said, her voice entirely flat. "It’s Marcus Vance from Altamont Liquidity. Or maybe it’s the Harris County Sheriff’s Department. I’d check if I were you."

With a curse, Marcus shoved her back onto the sofa and snatched his phone. His thumb swiped across the screen, opening a priority email notification from his corporate banking portal.

The screen displayed a massive, crimson notification: ALL CORPORATE AND PERSONAL LIQUIDITY ACCOUNTS FROZEN UNDER JUDICIAL ORDER CODE 419 — FINANCIAL INTELLIGENCE UNIT.

Below that was a secondary text alert from his head mechanic at the shop: Marcus, the police are here with a search warrant. They brought a state environmental task force. They’re tearing up the floorboards in the back office looking for some kind of industrial chemical storage. They’ve already found the fake registration ledger for the Thorne inheritance.

"What did you do?" Marcus roared, his face turning an angry, veins-bulging purple as he lunged toward her. "What did you do to my accounts?!"

"I didn't do anything to your accounts, Marcus," Danielle said, standing up and stepping toward the kitchen island where her canvas bag sat. "I’m just an accounting assistant. But three hours ago, I submitted a comprehensive forensic audit of Larios Custom Automotive directly to the Internal Revenue Service's Criminal Investigation Division and the Texas Department of Public Safety."

She pulled her laptop from her bag, turning the screen to face him. It displayed an active, high-resolution digital log of every wire transfer he had ever authorized to the Cayman Islands front companies, along with the high-resolution photo of the disintegrated chemical pendant and the forged life insurance application.

"I attached the metadata from your tablet showing you signed my name from our living room IP address," she said, her voice echoing with a lethal precision. "And I included a full statement from Evelyn Thorne—Clara’s mother. The police have already issued an international warrant for Thomas Thorne in Madrid. He’s turning state's evidence as we speak to save himself from a murder charge."

Marcus looked from the laptop screen to his wife, his breath coming in ragged, desperate gasps. The walls of his world were collapsing around him in real time, the five-million-dollar exit strategy dissolving like the cheap gold plating in the glass of water.

"You bitch," he hissed, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a heavy, steel-handled folding knife he used for cutting leather upholstery at the shop. The blade clicked open with a sharp, metallic snap. "You think a computer screen is going to save you right now? The police aren't here yet. I can end this before they even clear the highway."

He lunged across the living room, the blade flashing in the dim light.

Danielle didn't scream. She didn't run. She simply stepped backward into the kitchen, her hand reaching into the open drawer beside the stove where she had placed a heavy, cast-iron skillet.

But she didn't have to use it.

The front door of the apartment shattered inward with a deafening crash of splintering wood and metal. A flash-bang grenade detonated in the small entryway, filling the living room with a blinding white light and a concussive roar that threw Marcus off balance, sending him crashing into the coffee table, shattering the crystal wine glasses beneath his weight.

"Harris County Sheriff! Special Weapons and Tactics!" a voice boomed through the smoke. "Get on the ground! Face down! Now!"

Six heavily armed tactical officers poured into the room, their weapon-mounted lights cutting through the darkness. Before Marcus could lift his blade, two officers threw themselves onto his back, forcing his face into the wine-stained carpet and pulling his arms behind his back until the steel handcuffs clicked tightly around his wrists.
