Chapter 3 - Shadows of the Past

Two weeks passed.

The storm that had decimated the Vance-Sterling household barely registered as a ripple to the outside world. To the public, Vance Design LLC had simply quietly dissolved following an internal corporate restructuring. Elena Vance-Sterling had retired from public life due to "personal health reasons," vanishing into complete obscurity in a small, isolated cabin near the Big Sky region of Montana, stripped of every luxury she had ever coveted.

Rachel, Brenda, and Clara were remanded to the State Correctional Facility without bail, facing trial on multiple felony charges of child endangerment, unlawful restraint, and extortion—their legal defenses completely dismantled before they could even hire private attorneys.

At the estate in Boca Raton, the heavy atmosphere of deceit had been replaced by serene, sun-drenched quiet.

I spent my mornings sitting on the veranda overlooking the ocean, watching Mia run across the manicured green lawn with her new golden retriever puppy, Barnaby. Her cheeks had recovered their healthy, rosy glow, her laughter echoing through the air, pure and untainted.

I was no longer wearing faded sweaters or broken watches. I wore a crisp white linen shirt, tailored trousers, and an old gold signet ring—the mark of the Supreme Executive of the Sterling Syndicate—restored to my right hand.

Viktor walked onto the veranda, carrying a silver tray with fresh espresso and a secure tablet.

"Good morning, Boss," Viktor said, placing the coffee on the glass table.

"Morning, Viktor," I replied, keeping my eyes on Mia as she tossed a tennis ball across the grass. "How is she doing today?"

"Dr. Aris finished her child psychology evaluation an hour ago," Viktor reported. "She states Mia shows zero signs of lingering trauma. The child genuinely believes the cellar incident was just a bad dream because of how quickly and decisively you handled it."

I took a slow sip of espresso. "Good. That was the goal."

Viktor lingered by the table, his posture stiffer than usual.

"What is it, Viktor?" I asked, noticing his hesitation.

"We intercepted a transmission thirty minutes ago, Mr. Sterling," Viktor said, his tone dropping into a serious register. "From the Port of Miami."

I turned my head slightly. "The Moretti Family?"

"Yes, Sir," Viktor confirmed, opening a file on his tablet. "It appears Elena’s former contacts within the Moretti clan were unaware that her plot had failed. Last night, a cargo vessel owned by Moretti Shipping Lines docked at Terminal 4. Our intelligence network confirmed that Don Carmine Moretti’s eldest son, Lorenzo Moretti, personally arrived on that vessel."

I set my espresso cup down with a soft click against the saucer.

Lorenzo Moretti.

Five years ago, when I dismantled the Moretti Syndicate's hold over the Eastern seaboard, I allowed old Carmine Moretti to keep a minor commercial shipping business on the condition that his family never set foot in Florida again.

Lorenzo had always been the impulsive, ruthless hothead of the family. He was the one who had offered Elena twenty million dollars for access to my estate, hoping to use my quiet retirement as an opportunity to assassinate me and reclaim his family's lost territory.

"Does Lorenzo know Elena signed over her rights and fled?" I asked.

"No, Boss," Viktor replied. "Lorenzo still believes Elena is holding Mia inside a safehouse in Miami, waiting to exchange the child for his protection. He brought twelve heavily armed operatives with him. They are currently staged at a private warehouse near the docks."

A dark, icy calm settled over my chest.

Five years ago, I had chosen mercy. I had walked away from the underworld, laid down my weapons, and tried to build a normal, quiet life because I believed that peace was possible.

I had learned my lesson.

Weakness—or the appearance of weakness—did not invite peace. It invited predators. It invited people like Rachel, like Elena, and like Lorenzo Moretti, who mistook restraint for vulnerability.

"Where is the warehouse?" I asked quietly.

"Pier 42, West Basin," Viktor answered.

I stood up from my chair, buttoning my linen jacket.

"Call Marcus," I commanded. "Have him stay with Mia and her nanny until I return. Tell him if anyone approaches the estate grounds without clear clearance, execute full defensive protocols."

"And for you, Sir?" Viktor asked, a lethal glint appearing in his dark eyes.

"Prepare the strike team," I said softly, looking out at my daughter playing in the sunshine. "It's time to remind the underworld why they stopped using my name."
