Chapter 3 - The Shadow of Bratislava

The lower vault of Villa Chillon was built forty feet into the solid alpine granite beneath the estate. Equipped with an independent air filtration system, private living quarters, and direct satellite comms, it was designed to withstand a military siege.
For three days, Anya and I lived in the subterranean comfort of the vault while the war raged above and across Western Europe.
Dmitri brought us daily updates. Konstantin had departed for Geneva to confront Mikhail and the syndicate heads directly, leaving thirty of his most elite guards to secure the alpine fortress.
On the fourth night, as a roaring blizzard battered the mountain above, the vault’s auxiliary lights flickered violently.
A low, muffled shudder vibrated through the granite walls.
I stood up from the sofa, pulling Anya tightly against my chest.
The heavy steel vault door began to hiss as its hydraulic seals released. My heart pounded against my ribs like a trapped bird. I backed away toward the rear corner of the room, clutching a silver letter opener I had taken from the desk.
The steel door swung open.
Standing in the threshold was not Konstantin, nor Dmitri.
It was a tall, lean man with a scarred jaw and sharp, predatory blue eyes, wearing a blood-stained tactical jacket. Behind him stood three armed men carrying silenced submachine guns.
Mikhail.
"So," Mikhail sneered, stepping into the warm light of the vault, his accent thick and grating. "This is the legendary nurse who saved Volkov's little bastard."
"Don't come any closer," I said, my voice trembling, but holding my ground in front of the crib.
Mikhail chuckled dryly, shaking his head. "Relax, woman. I didn't come all the way up this miserable mountain to kill a baby. I came to take what Konstantin values most."
He stepped forward, reaching out a gloved hand toward Anya. "With his daughter in my hands, Volkov will sign over every shipping lane from Rotterdam to St. Petersburg by morning."
"Touch her and I'll kill you," I spat, raising the silver blade.
Mikhail laughed, easily grabbing my wrist and squeezing until the blade clattered to the floor. "You have spirit, nurse. But spirit doesn't stop steel."
Before he could pull Anya from my arms, a deafening crack echoed through the concrete corridor outside.
The guard standing behind Mikhail collapsed forward, a dark hole blooming in the center of his chest.
Mikhail spun around, pulling his weapon, but a shadow moved through the doorway with terrifying speed.
Konstantin Volkov burst into the room like an apex predator unleashed.
He caught Mikhail’s arm, twisting it upward until bone snapped with a horrific crack. Mikhail shrieked in pain, dropping his gun. Konstantin didn't pause; he slammed Mikhail violently against the granite wall, his broad hand crushing the man's windpipe.
"You dared enter my home," Konstantin growled, his voice a dark, demonic whisper that vibrated through the small room. "You dared lay a hand on my family."
"Konstantin... wait!" Mikhail gasped, his eyes bulging with terror. "The... the board...!"
"The board is dead," Konstantin said flatly. "I executed them two hours ago in Geneva."
With a sudden, ruthless twist, Konstantin ended Mikhail's life, letting the lifeless body slump to the floor.
Silence returned to the vault, broken only by the quiet hum of the air filtration system.
Konstantin stood over the body, his dark coat splattered with snow and blood, his chest heaving heavily. Slowly, he turned his head to look at us.
The terrifying rage in his eyes softened the moment his gaze fell upon Anya and me. He dropped his weapon onto the table, took off his blood-stained gloves, and sanitized his hands with meticulous care before taking a single step toward us.
"Are you hurt, Elena?" he asked softly, his voice trembling slightly.
I looked at the bloody scene, then looked at the man who had torn through an army to reach us. I wasn't afraid of him. For the first time in two years, I felt entirely, undeniably safe.

"We are unhurt," I whispered.
Konstantin reached out, pulling both Anya and me into his massive, warm embrace, holding us as if we were the only precious things left in a dark world.
