Chapter 4 - The Unraveling

The sixty-inch screen flickered to life, displaying crisp, high-definition video with crystal-clear audio.
The timestamp in the corner read: 9:15 AM.
The video showed the interior of our nursery. Emma was sitting on the edge of the bed, visibly pale and gasping for breath. Vivian entered the room carrying a tray with a bottle of pills and a glass of water.
On the recording, Vivian’s polite smile vanished the moment the door closed behind her.
"Time for your pills, Emma," Vivian’s recorded voice echoed through the kitchen speakers, loud, harsh, and dripping with malicious pleasure.
The real Vivian in the kitchen froze as if she had been struck by lightning. Her hands began to shake, almost dropping the bottle of formula she was holding.
On the screen, Emma reached out a trembling hand. "Thank you, Vivian... my side hurts so bad today..."
Instead of handing her the pills, the video showed Vivian deliberately twisting the cap off the bottle, stepping over to the wooden floor beside the bed, and crushing three pain tablets between her fingers before dropping the rest of the bottle onto the floor, where it shattered a glass picture frame.
On the recording, Emma gasped in horror. "Vivian! What are you doing?!"
Vivian walked over to the crib, picked up the crying infant Oliver, and held him up high, out of Emma’s reach.
"Oliver is crying because his mother is weak and useless," Vivian’s recorded voice boomed through the kitchen. "Get down and clean every piece. Only then will I let you hold him."
In the kitchen, the silence that followed the recording was suffocating.
My father, Richard, stared at the television screen with his mouth slightly open. His face turned from pale white to a deep, dangerous crimson. The glasses in his hand trembled so violently they clicked against his wedding ring.
He slowly turned his head to look at his wife of thirty-five years.
"Vivian..." Richard whispered, his voice cracking with a mixture of absolute horror and profound disgust. "What... what did you just do?"
"Richard, wait! That's... that's not what it looks like!" Vivian stammered, her theatrical grace collapsing into frantic, desperate panic. "It was an edit! It's a deepfake! Daniel manipulated the video because he's stressed at work! You know how unstable Emma is—"
"Shut up," Richard said.
He didn't shout. He spoke in a low, trembling voice that contained thirty-five years of broken trust.
"Shut your mouth, Vivian," Richard repeated, standing up from the table. "I have sat by for decades listening to you complain about Natalie being 'difficult.' I sat by while you drove our daughter out of the house! And all this time... you were doing this?!"
"Richard, please!" Vivian cried, stepping toward him, using Oliver as a shield. "I was only trying to teach her how to be strong! She's soft, Richard! She was going to ruin Daniel's life with her weakness!"
"Give me my grandson," I said, stepping directly into Vivian’s path.
My voice was quiet, cold, and absolute.
Vivian backed away toward the counter, clutching the baby tightly against her chest. "No! You're all crazy! You're attacking me in my own son's home! I am the grandmother! I have rights!"
"You have five seconds to hand me my son," I said, taking one slow step forward. "Or I call the police standing outside on the driveway and press charges for felony elder abuse, child endangerment, and illegal destruction of prescription narcotics. I have twelve different angles recorded from this morning alone."
Vivian looked at my eyes. She searched for the hesitant, obedient son she thought she could control forever.

She found nothing.
With trembling hands, her face twisted in a ugly, bitter grimace of pure defeat, she passed the sleeping newborn into my arms.
