Chapter 5 - The Trap Springs Back

The silence in the living room stretched for three agonizing seconds.

Daniel stood with his hands half-extended, waiting for me to break, waiting for the tears to flow, waiting for the inevitable submission of a woman who realized she was entirely outmatched.

Instead, I stopped shaking.

The terror that had gripped my chest since I saw the kiss on the porch suddenly dissolved, replaced by a cold, razor-sharp clarity. I lowered my phone, letting the screen glow brightly in the dim light of the room.

“You’re right, Daniel,” I said, my voice cutting through the heavy air with an eerie, unnatural calmness.

Daniel blinked, caught off guard by my tone. “Wh-What?”

“You’re right,” I repeated, taking a slow step forward and placing the manila envelope back down on the coffee table. “I don't have the legal resources to fight a multi-million-dollar real estate trust fund on my own. I don't have the high-priced attorneys or the forged notarization stamps.”

Lauren smirked, tossing her dark hair over her shoulder. “Glad to see you finally developed some common sense, Sarah. Sign page four, hand over your car keys, and we can all go to sleep.”

Richard Vance smiled condescendingly, taking another sip of his bourbon. “Smart girl. It’s always best to cut your losses before the legal fees exceed your net worth.”

I didn't smile back. I simply looked at all three of them—my husband, his mistress, and the man who had betrayed my father’s memory—with a look of profound, chilling pity.

“There’s just one tiny problem with your plan,” I said softly.

Richard’s smile faltered slightly. “And what’s that?”

“You assumed I was the only one paying attention to the archival data,” I said.

Before Richard could ask what I meant, the deep, rumbling sound of heavy diesel engines echoed violently from outside our house.

Vroom.

The sound wasn't a single car. It was multiple heavy vehicles pulling up simultaneously into our driveway, blocking both exits, tires crunching aggressively over the gravel pathway.

Before anyone in the room could react, a blinding wall of white floodlights suddenly snapped on outside, casting harsh, glaring beams through the living room windows and illuminating every corner of the room in stark daylight.

Daniel gasped, dropping his glass. It shattered against the hardwood floor, sending shards of crystal and brown liquid flying in all directions.

“What is that?” Lauren shrieked, rushing to the window and pulling back the blinds.

Outside, three blacked-out SUVs with federal enforcement insignia stamped on the doors were parked across the lawn. A dozen armed federal marshals and white-collar crime investigators were swarming the property, securing the perimeter with military precision.

And leading them up the porch steps was Agent Marcus Vance—no relation to Richard, but the lead investigator of the federal financial crimes task force my father had worked with years ago.

Bang. Bang. Bang.

A heavy, authoritative fist pounded loudly against the front door.

“Federal Law Enforcement! Open the door!” a booming voice echoed through the house.

Richard Vance’s face turned the color of ash. All the color instantly drained from his cheeks, and his knees buckled slightly against the edge of the wet bar. He dropped his glass, staring in absolute, paralyzed horror at the front door.

“No,” Richard whispered, shaking his head frantically. “No, that’s impossible. We locked down the server logs—we wiped the IP addresses—”

“You wiped the local server, Richard,” I said, stepping past Daniel and walking right up to the older man, holding my phone out so the recording indicator light blinked directly in his face. “You forgot that federal oversight servers mirror every financial transaction executed under a certified family trust the moment a secondary audit trigger is pulled. And my father set that trigger to go off five years ago.”

Daniel spun around to face me, his eyes wide with blind panic, his hands grabbing wildly at my sleeves.

“Sarah! Sarah, please! You have to help me! Tell them it’s a misunderstanding! We’re married—!”

I yanked my arm out of his grip with a sharp, disgusted jerk, stepping back as if touching him would poison me.

“Don't ever touch me again, Daniel,” I whispered coldly.

Crash!

The front door didn't just open—it was breached. The heavy deadbolts splintered under a tactical ram, and federal agents flooded into the foyer, weapons lowered but authorities unquestionable.

“Richard Vance? Daniel Miller? Lauren Vance?” Agent Marcus Vance called out, stepping into the living room with a stack of federal arrest warrants in his hand. “You are under arrest for conspiracy, wire fraud, identity theft, and corporate racketeering. Put your hands behind your back.”
