Chapter 3 - The Collapse of Apex Lifestyle

The raid on Jaxson Drake’s apartment took place on a Thursday morning at 6:00 a.m.

Thanks to the financial trail I had handed over to the federal cyber-fraud division—compiled by my private forensic accountants over the previous six months—the authorities didn’t just find a personal trainer living above his means. They found a sophisticated blackmail and extortion ring.

Jaxson hadn't just been Janelle’s lover; he had been recording their intimate encounters in luxury hotels across California and using the footage to extort six-figure payouts from the Ambrose family. Ryan, desperate to keep his mother’s scandals out of the press and off the radar of high-society circles, had quietly dipped into corporate accounts, thinking he could outrun the bleeding.

Instead, he had willingly funded his own destruction.

I sat in my downtown office overlooking the San Diego harbor, watching the morning fog roll over the Coronado Bridge, when my phone rang.

It was Detective Miller from the financial crimes unit.

“Mrs. Ruiz,” he said, his tone professional and brisk. “We’ve executed the search warrants at the Sunset Boulevard address and Jaxson’s residence. We recovered three hard drives containing the extortion files, as well as several high-end watches and cash lockers purchased with funds traced directly from your husband’s corporate proxy accounts.”

“Are the arrests being processed?” I asked calmly.

“Jaxson Drake is in custody on federal wire fraud and extortion charges. And as for Ryan Ambrose... our investigators are interviewing him at the precinct right now regarding corporate embezzlement and accessory to extortion.”

A quiet, profound sense of release washed over me. For five years, I had allowed myself to play a supporting role in a family of emotional parasites. I had let them diminish my intelligence, mock my ambition, and treat my wealth like an infinite well from which they had every right to drink.

“Thank you, Detective. Please keep me updated on the arraignment schedule.”

“Will do, Mrs. Ruiz. Oh, and one more thing—your father-in-law is downstairs in the lobby. He’s been asking to speak with you for over an hour.”

I paused, looking at the city skyline outside my window. “Send him up.”
