Chapter 3 - The Warrant at Midnight

The knock on the front door came at 11:42 PM.
It wasn't a polite, neighborly knock. It was the heavy, rhythmic thud of steel-toed boots against reinforced wood—the universal sound of a judicial mandate being enforced by people who didn't intend to take no for an answer.
Downstairs, I heard Daniel grope blindly for a light switch, grumbling curses under his breath.
"Who the hell is at the door at midnight?" Daniel muttered loudly, his footsteps heavy on the hardwood floor.
I stood in the upstairs hallway beside my mother, who was wrapped in a warm blanket, sitting safely in a plush armchair. Downstairs, the front door swung open.
"State Police! Do not move!"
The sharp, authoritative roar echoed through the stairwell, followed by the sound of heavy boots swarming into the foyer.
"What is this?!" Daniel shrieked, his voice instantly cracking from panic into high-pitched terror. "I am a respectable citizen! You can't just barge into my house—"
"Quiet down, Mr. Moretti," a deep, gravelly voice interrupted. It was Captain Vance of the State Police Major Crimes Division, a man I had worked with on multiple high-profile white-collar corruption cases. "Step away from the door and put your hands where I can see them."
"This is outrageous!" Vanessa screamed, appearing from the master bedroom in a silk bathrobe, her hair wild. "We'll sue you! We know people! Call our lawyer—"
"Save your breath for the magistrate, Mrs. Moretti," Captain Vance replied coldly.
Footsteps rushed up the stairs. Two uniformed troopers rounded the corner into the hallway, stopping abruptly when they saw me standing beside my mother.
"Assistant Attorney General Bennett," Captain Vance said, walking up the stairs and nodding respectfully. "We secured the emergency protective order from Judge Mercer thirty minutes ago. Additionally, we have signed warrants for the immediate arrest of Daniel and Vanessa Moretti on charges of elder abuse, aggravated assault, financial fraud, and unlawful imprisonment."
Downstairs, Daniel let out a desperate, strangled sob. "Claire! Claire, tell them! Tell them you're my sister! Make them stop!"
I walked slowly to the top of the stairs, looking down at my brother. He was handcuffed behind his back, held firmly by two state troopers, his expensive shirt wrinkled and his face pale with absolute horror. Vanessa was sobbing hysterically against the living room wall as a female officer zip-tied her wrists.
"You called the cops," Daniel whispered, his eyes wide with betrayal. "You actually called the cops on your own family."
"You stopped being my family the moment you tied an elderly woman to a bed and beat her for her bank accounts," I said, my voice cutting through the silent room like a razor. "You thought no one would look beneath the surface because you hid behind a polished smile and forged legal documents. You forgot one simple rule, Daniel."

He stared up at me, trembling.
"Never underestimate an attorney who knows how to look at the receipts."
