Chapter 10 - The New Foundation

Six months later.

The spring sun was shining through the massive floor-to-ceiling windows of the estate's main foyer.

I stood near the grand staircase, reviewing a quarterly report on my tablet. The numbers were incredible. Estate efficiency was up fifty percent, turnover had dropped to zero, and employee morale was higher than it had been in a decade.

Footsteps echoed across the marble floor.

It was a sharp, confident, perfectly rhythmic sound. Click. Clack. Click. Clack.

I looked up.

Annie Carter was walking toward me. She wasn't wearing a gray-and-white maid's uniform anymore. She was wearing a sharply tailored navy blue blazer, and a sleek skirt that purposely showed off the gleaming, state-of-the-art titanium and carbon-fiber leg she wore with absolute pride.

She walked with a flawless, confident stride, holding a digital tablet that controlled every system in the house.

“Morning, Mr. Graves,” Annie said, a bright, professional smile on her face. “I’ve just upgraded the firewall on the security grid, and Samuel and I have finalized the new ergonomic workflow for the kitchen staff.”

“Excellent work, Annie,” I said, genuinely beaming with pride.

She paused, looking out the window toward the front gates. “Frank Talbot is back from his knee surgery today, too. I made sure the new braces we ordered were waiting in his locker.”

“You think of everything.”

“I just pay attention, sir,” she said warmly.

I watched her walk down the hallway to brief the staff. She wasn't a ghost in the machine anymore; she was the heart of it.

I had come home early that day six months ago to catch people when they weren't looking. I had expected to find laziness, or theft, or incompetence.

Instead, I found my own humanity, perfectly preserved in the quiet, unbreakable spirit of a girl who refused to let a broken world keep her from standing tall.
