Chapter 3 - Awakening

The room was dim, illuminated only by the soft, rhythmic glow of the heart monitor and the amber streetlights filtering through the window blinds.
Clara lay in the hospital bed, her face still pale, her lips chapped, but her breathing was steady and deep. Her left hand rested outside the white blanket, bruised around the knuckles where she had fought to protect our daughter and her doll.
I pushed the door open softly, stepped inside, and pulled a chair up beside her bed.
I didn't speak. I simply took her cold, fragile hand in mine, pressing my thumb gently against her bruised wrist.
After a few moments, Clara’s eyelids fluttered. She stirred, letting out a soft sigh, and slowly turned her head.
“Michael?” she whispered, her voice rough and dry.
“I’m here, sweetheart,” I murmured, leaning in close so my lips brushed her forehead. “I’m right here. You’re safe. They’re gone.”
Clara’s eyes filled with tears, spilling over her lashes and running down her pale cheeks. “I tried... I tried so hard to keep Lily safe, Michael. Your mother... she locked us in. She wouldn't let me call you. She said you didn't care about us anymore...”
“I know,” I said, my own voice breaking as I kissed her knuckles. “I know everything. The police have the recordings, the bank records, the medical proof. Mother and Daniel are in custody. They are never coming back near us.”
Clara let out a long, shuddering breath—a breath she seemed to have been holding for two terrifying weeks. The tension that had locked her shoulders melted away, and she squeezed my hand back with surprising strength.
“And Lily?” she asked, panic suddenly flashing in her eyes.

“She’s sleeping just down the hall in Pediatrics,” I reassured her quickly. “Dr. Reyes says she’s going to make a full recovery. No lasting damage. She’s brave, Clara. Just like her mother.”
Clara closed her eyes, a peaceful tear slipping down her cheek as she nodded against the pillow. “Thank God... thank God you came home when you did.”
