Chapter 1 - The Hollow Ground

The flashlight beam trembled in Eric’s hand, though his grip was that of a man who had held rifles in the heat of active combat. In the silence of the Pennsylvania night, the only sound was Emma’s ragged breathing against his chest and the distant, rhythmic chirping of crickets. The grave he had uncovered—not the one Emma had been forced to stand in, but the one containing the remains of little Sarah Chun—was a jagged wound in the earth, a testament to a cruelty that transcended simple madness.
Eric retreated, his tactical mind overriding his visceral horror. He needed to extract Emma, secure the scene, and ensure that Myrtle Savage and Brenda could not destroy the evidence. As he walked back to his truck, he saw the kitchen light of the farmhouse flicker. Myrtle was watching. She knew what he had found.

He shoved Emma into the passenger seat, buckling her in with hands that refused to shake. "Emma, look at me," he commanded, his voice firm but gentle. "You are safe. We are going to see a doctor, and then we are going to see the police. You never have to go back to that house."
As he peeled out of the gravel driveway, he saw Myrtle standing on the porch. She wasn't running; she was holding a telephone to her ear, watching him with an expression of cold, detached finality. She wasn't just a grandmother; she was a gatekeeper to a history of disappearances that the town had long chosen to ignore. Eric realized then that his return from war hadn't ended his mission—it had simply changed the theater of operations.
