Chapter 4 - Healing Under the Texas Sky

Three weeks later, the physical and corporate restructuring of our lives was well underway.

The federal investigation into Miller and his co-conspirators resulted in swift indictments, ensuring that Vivian and Marcus would face maximum sentencing without the option of a plea bargain. Hale Construction was officially restored under my father's chairmanship, with myself acting as interim general counsel to audit every department and purge the remaining rot.

On a warm Saturday afternoon, my father and I sat on the back patio overlooking the rolling green lawns and the private garden my mother had planted decades ago.

Dad was walking with a cane now, his strength slowly returning as the heavy narcotics were cleared from his system and replaced with proper physical therapy.

"You know, Izzy," Dad said softly, taking a sip of iced tea from a crystal glass, "when you left six years ago... I thought I had failed you. I thought the corporate world had broken your spirit."

I looked out across the lawn, watching the afternoon sun catch the golden leaves of the oak trees.

"You didn't break my spirit, Dad," I smiled, turning to look at him. "You just taught me how to read the fine print. I spent six years learning how the worst people in the world hide behind legalese so that when I came back, nobody could ever hurt you—or me—ever again."

He reached across the table, taking my hand in his. His grip was firm, steady, and warm.

"Your mother would have been so proud of you," he said, his voice thick with emotion. "I certainly am."

My phone buzzed on the table. It was an email notification from the federal prosecutor's office regarding the asset seizure hearings for Vivian’s bank accounts. Everything they had tried to steal had already been recovered, audited, and returned to the corporate trust.

I locked the screen, turned the phone face down, and smiled.
