Chapter 4 - The Showdown at the Gala

The annual Chicago Architecture and Design Gala was the most prestigious night of the year, held in the grand ballroom of the Palmer House Hilton. Two hundred architects, developers, city officials, and investors milled about in black-tie attire beneath gilded ceilings.
I wore a custom emerald-green gown that cost more than a used car, my hair swept up in a sophisticated twist, and my expression cool and composed.
Daniel stood beside me, holding a glass of champagne, playing the part of the devoted, supportive corporate husband to absolute perfection.
“You look breathtaking tonight, Claire,” Daniel whispered into my ear as the master of ceremonies stepped up to the podium. “I’m the luckiest man in the room.”
“Thank you, Daniel,” I replied softly. “Let’s hope your luck holds out through the evening.”
He chuckled, missing the cold double-meaning entirely.
Up on the stage, the keynote speaker took the microphone. But before the speech began, the ballroom’s projection screens—usually reserved for displaying architectural renderings—suddenly flickered to life.
Instead of a blueprint, the screen displayed a bold, glaring corporate header:
NOTICE OF FORENSIC AUDIT & LEGAL RECOVERY MERCHANT CONSULTING / MERCER HOLDINGS
A collective murmur rippled through the two hundred guests.
Daniel froze. His glass of champagne slipped from his fingers, shattering against the marble floor with a sharp, echoing crash.
“What... what is this?” Daniel stammered, grabbing my arm. “Claire, look at the screen! Someone hacked the presentation system!”
I didn't flinch. I slowly turned my head and looked him dead in the eye.
“Nobody hacked it, Daniel,” I said, my voice cutting through the growing chatter of the ballroom.
Up on the stage, David Vance stepped up to the microphone holding a thick manila folder. The auditorium speakers amplified his calm, authoritative voice across the entire room.
“Good evening, ladies and gentlemen,” David announced. “Due to recent discoveries involving corporate embezzlement, fraudulent power-of-attorney execution, and unauthorized shell-company transfers totaling over eight hundred thousand dollars from Hartwell-Vance Architecture, we are announcing the immediate freezing of all personal and corporate assets belonging to Daniel Mercer.”
The room erupted into total chaos. Whispers and gasps echoed off the gold-leaf walls.
Daniel’s face turned the color of ash. He stared at the stage, then down at me, his eyes wide with blind panic. “Claire! Tell them to turn it off! Tell them it’s a mistake! You know me!”
“I know you very well, Daniel,” I said coldly, stepping away from his grasp.
At that exact moment, the audio system on the stage switched over.
Clear as crystal, the speakers began playing the recording from New Year’s Eve:
“There’s just under eight hundred thousand in the investment account we opened through Meridian Consulting... She designs fifty-story buildings, but if I put a yellow tab beside a signature line, she signs without looking... Then I file for divorce... She still thinks my trips to Indianapolis are for business. She has no idea I’ve been spending three nights a week with Savannah for almost two years.”
The entire ballroom went dead silent.
Every head in the room snapped toward Daniel. Across the aisle, several prominent developers who had known Daniel for years stared at him with undisguised disgust.
Daniel stood shaking like a leaf, his mouth opening and closing soundlessly. He looked like a man who had just watched his entire world detonate in slow motion.
“You... you recorded me?” he whispered, his voice cracking with humiliation.
May you like
“You recorded yourself,” I corrected him.
Before he could speak, two uniformed security officers walked down the center aisle, flanked by local detectives holding a formal arrest warrant for white-collar fraud and grand larceny.
