Chapter 7 - A New Dawn
The courtroom grew so quiet you could hear the hum of the overhead fluorescent lights. Judge Sterling picked up her heavy wooden gavel, though she didn’t strike it; she simply held it as she looked down directly at Evelyn and Melissa.
“The petition for a permanent restraining order protecting Natalie Harper and minor child Lily Harper is granted in full,” Judge Sterling declared clearly. “Evelyn Harper and Melissa Harper are barred from coming within five hundred yards of the petitioners, their residence, or the child’s school. Any attempt at direct or indirect contact, electronic communication, or third-party messaging will result in immediate arrest and contempt of court charges.”
Evelyn gasped, half-rising from her chair. “You can’t do this! I am her mother! I raised her!”
“Sit down, Mrs. Harper,” the bailiff warned, his hand resting casually on his utility belt.
Judge Sterling wasn't finished. “Furthermore, given the documented financial coercion, malicious use of emergency services, and intentional infliction of emotional distress, I am ordering the respondents to jointly pay one hundred thousand dollars in punitive damages and legal restitution to the petitioner within ninety days.”
Harrison looked like he had just swallowed a lemon. He turned to Evelyn and whispered frantically, but Evelyn was staring across the courtroom at me with a look of pure, unadulterated venom.
It wasn't regret. It wasn't remorse. It was the bitter rage of a tyrant who had just realized her throne had burned to ash.
“This court is adjourned,” Judge Sterling said, striking her gavel once with a crisp, final crack.
As the bailiffs escorted Evelyn and Melissa out through the side doors, avoiding the press gallery, I sat back in my chair and let out a breath I felt like I had been holding for thirty years.

Marcus turned to me with a warm, approving smile. “It’s over, Natalie. They can never touch you or Lily again.”
“Thank you, Marcus,” I said, shaking his hand. “You gave us our lives back.”
