Chapter 7 - The New Reign

Six months later, the early summer sun broke through the gray Boston skies, turning the harbor into a sheet of glittering, brilliant diamonds. The grand gallery of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts was filled with the elite of the city's architectural and legal communities, the ambient chatter loud under the high glass dome.
At the top of the marble grand staircase stood Maya Hayes.
She wore a stunning, emerald-green silk dress that exposed the clean, elegant lines of her throat, her gold hair swept back into a neat, confident crown that held no memory of the hands that had tried to drag her down. She was laughing, a glass of sparkling water in her hand, talking with the chief executive of the state’s largest logistics conglomerate—the company she had just been hired to manage as the senior director of operational compliance.
Beside her stood Elena, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit that reflected the quiet, lethal dignity of a woman who had spent thirty-two years taking the monsters apart.
"Ms. Hayes," a voice called out from the crowd.
It was the restaurant manager from The Copper Lantern, looking immaculate in his evening tuxedo. He bowed his head with a profound, professional respect that had been earned through blood.
"Congratulations on the appointment, ma'am," the manager said smoothly. "We have reserved the private balcony suite at our establishment for your celebration dinner tonight. There will be no... disruptions this time. I give you my personal word."

Elena smiled, a genuine, warm feeling that lit up her face, erasing the final shadows of that Sunday evening in March. She raised her glass toward the window, where the city lights stretched out before them—vast, beautiful, and entirely under their influence.
"Thank you, Julian," Elena said softly. "But we’ll take the table in the center of the room this time. My daughter has no reason to hide in the corners anymore."
