Chapter 1 - The Sound of the Handcuffs

The sharp click of steel handcuffs snapping around Grant Whitmore’s wrists echoed down the sanitized hallway of Mercy General Hospital like a gavel coming down in a courtroom.

Avery Whitmore stood motionless, her hand still pressed against her lower abdomen. Eight months pregnant, her breath came in slow, deliberate rhythms to keep her daughter calm despite the spike in adrenaline. Across from her, Grant—the CEO of Whitmore Medical Systems, a man whose smile usually commanded boardrooms and dominated charity galas—wore an expression of utter disbelief as the stainless steel bit into his skin.

“You can’t do this, Patrick,” Grant stammered, his polished corporate composure completely dissolving as two sheriff’s deputies flanked him. “This is a domestic dispute blown out of proportion! Call your lawyers, Avery! Tell them this is a mistake!”

District Attorney Patrick Harlan didn't even dignify Grant’s plea with a glance. He stood tall, his silver hair catching the fluorescent glare, his navy overcoat unbuttoned to reveal the heavy silver badge pinned to his belt. His eyes were fixed entirely on his daughter, assessing every shift in her posture, checking for the pale, clammy signs of shock.

“Are you alright, Avery?” Patrick asked, his authoritative tone instantly softening into that of a concerned father.

“I’m okay, Dad,” Avery murmured, wiping the faint streak of blood from the corner of her lip with the back of her hand. “The baby... she kicked. She’s strong.”

Beside Grant, Brooke Keating was trembling, her designer handbag slipping from her shoulder and hitting the linoleum floor with a hollow thud. The reality of the situation was crashing down on her like a tidal wave.

“This is insane!” Brooke shrieked, struggling as the second deputy reached for her wrist. “You can’t arrest me! I just slapped her! People get into fights in hospitals every day! Grant told me she was unhinged, that she’d been stalking us!”

“Ms. Keating,” the deputy said flatly, pulling her hands behind her back. “You are under arrest for assault on a pregnant person, disorderly conduct, and destruction of hospital peace.”

“Grant! Tell them!” Brooke cried out, her mascara running as she looked frantically at her lover. “Tell them you set this up! You told me to confront her so we could get her medical records flagged!”

Grant’s head snapped toward her, his face dark with sheer panic and fury. “Shut your mouth, Brooke.”

“No! I won't!” Brooke wept as the cold metal cuffs locked around her wrists. “You said her father had no jurisdiction here, that the hospital was in your pocket because of your foundation donations! You said she’d lose custody the second the baby was born!”

Patrick Harlan stepped forward, his leather folder snapping shut with a crisp sound that silenced the crying woman.

“Mr. Whitmore,” Patrick said, his voice cold enough to freeze water. “Did you honestly believe that because you funded a wing of this hospital, the law didn't apply to you? Did you forget who wrote the multi-jurisdictional corruption statutes for King County?”

Grant swallowed hard, his throat dry. He looked around the hallway. The nurses, the security guards, the terrified medical residents—every single one of them had averted their eyes, terrified of crossing the District Attorney.

“Take them down to booking,” Patrick ordered the deputies. “Separate vehicles. And make sure the chain of custody for the hallway security footage is locked down by my office within the hour.”

“Dad,” Avery said quietly as the deputies led Grant and Brooke toward the elevators.

Grant looked back over his shoulder one last time. His eyes weren't filled with love, or remorse, or even fear anymore. They were filled with a dark, calculating venom.

“You’re destroying everything we built, Avery,” Grant muttered through gritted teeth just before the elevator doors slid shut. “You’ll never see a dime of the foundation. You’ll be ruined.”

The doors closed. The hallway fell dead silent.

Patrick turned to his daughter immediately, gently taking her by the elbows. “Let’s get you into an exam room, Avery. Right now. I don’t care what the triage nurse says; we are running a complete fetal monitor check.”

“I’m fine, Dad,” Avery sighed, though she let him guide her toward the private VIP suite at the end of the hall—a suite Grant had arrogantly reserved for Brooke’s anticipated cosmetic procedures, but which now belonged entirely to Avery. “More importantly... are you ready for what comes next?”

May you like

Patrick pulled open the heavy oak door of the suite, a grim, humorless smile touching the corners of his mouth.

“Avery,” her father said softly, “Grant thinks his arrest is the storm. He has no idea we haven't even opened the front gates yet. Wait until they see what’s inside the LILAC file.”
