Chapter 8 - The Trap at Pier 14

Two weeks later, the transition had taken full effect.

Elena Brooks no longer wore the black maid’s uniform. She sat behind a sleek, dual-monitor workstation on the top floor of Moretti Global’s corporate headquarters in downtown Boston, dressed in a sharp charcoal blazer, reviewing digital shipping manifests with a level of focused precision that had already earned the grudging respect of the entire senior financial team.

Yet, despite her new office, Gabriel had insisted she sleep in a secure guest suite inside the estate rather than return to her old apartment across town, citing ongoing perimeter intelligence reports about suspicious activity near the harbor.

It was 8:00 PM on a freezing Thursday evening.

Gabriel sat behind his massive mahogany desk in his private study at the estate, reviewing a consolidated audit report Elena had compiled for him earlier that afternoon.

The numbers were clean. Impeccably clean. For the first time in five years, every shipping container moving through Pier 14 accounted for every single dollar of legitimate cargo.

Suddenly, the heavy oak doors of the study flew open.

Marco burst into the room, his face pale, breathing heavily as if he had just sprinted up three flights of stairs.

“Boss,” Marco said, his voice tight with alarm. “We have an emergency code red.”

Gabriel didn't panic. He laid the audit report down slowly, standing up from his desk with cold, lethal calm. “Talk to me, Marco.”

“Our perimeter sensors at Pier 14 just picked up an unauthorized breach,” Marco reported rapidly, tapping his tablet. “A localized tactical team—professionally trained, carrying unregistered firearms—just forced entry into the secondary warehouse where Elena’s family medical records and past employment files from the agency were archived.”

Gabriel’s eyes went pitch black. The temperature in the room dropped ten degrees.

“They weren't looking for shipping manifests,” Gabriel whispered, the realization hitting him with the force of a freight train. “They were looking for Elena.”

“They snatched her, Boss,” Marco said grimly. “She stayed late at the downtown office working on the quarterly reconciliation, and her security detail lost visual for ten minutes in the parking garage. By the time our backup arrived, her car was empty, and her laptop was left behind.”

Gabriel didn't hesitate for a single second. He walked past Marco, reached into his desk drawer, pulled out a custom-loaded Sig Sauer P226, and checked the chamber with a sharp, metallic clack.

“Get the tactical vehicles fueled and ready at the front gates,” Gabriel ordered, his voice dropping into the terrifying, absolute register of a man going to war. “Nobody touches someone under my roof and walks away breathing.”
