Chapter 5 - The Empire’s New Armor

Three days later, the cathedral on Madison Avenue was bathed in the golden light of late afternoon.
Five hundred of the most powerful people in New York—politicians, tech billionaires, syndicate bosses, and society elites—sat in absolute silence beneath the soaring stained-glass windows. The organ music swelled, rich and thunderous, echoing off the stone pillars.
At the altar stood Luca Moretti.
He didn't look like a groom waiting for a society wedding. He looked like an emperor surveying his domain.
His new custom suit—tailored in absolute secrecy over seventy-two unbroken hours in my private suite—was a masterpiece of modern engineering disguised as classic elegance. The midnight-blue wool absorbed the cathedral light, cut with razor-sharp precision that broad shoulders and a lethal posture demanded.
Every seam was double-locked. Every structural interlining was reinforced with Kevlar-threaded silk. And hidden neatly beneath the left cuff was a custom-tailored pocket holding not a tracker, but a micro-encrypted panic button linked directly to my private console.
The heavy oak doors at the back of the cathedral swung open.
There was no bride walking down the aisle today. The engagement to Vivien Cross had been quietly dissolved through a series of rapid corporate acquisitions and federal indictments that saw her family’s remaining assets seized before breakfast.
Instead, walking down the center aisle on the arm of a trusted senior partner was a new chapter of Whitaker-Moretti Holdings—or rather, a man standing entirely on his own terms.
As Luca turned to watch the procession, his dark eyes caught mine.
I stood in the shadows of the stone archway near the side vestry, wearing a tailored charcoal blazer of my own design, my silver shears resting securely in their leather holster at my hip.
Luca gave me a single, imperceptible nod.

The suit held its line. The shoulders didn't bunch. The fabric breathed with his pulse, strong, flawless, and impenetrable.
In a city built on lies, betrayal, and expensive silk, I had finally found my place. I wasn't just a seamstress anymore. I was the architect of the armor that kept the most dangerous man in the city alive—and nobody would ever pull the thread on me again.
