Chapter 2 - Smoke in the Ballroom

The night of the Callaway Freight Systems Spring Gala and Engagement Announcement arrived in a cascade of flashing cameras and diamonds. Boston's elite poured through the iron gates, filling the massive marble ballroom with the sound of clinking crystal and orchestrated laughter.
Lily was enchanted. In her simple, neat yellow dress—not the chiffon monstrosity Vivien had threatened to buy, but a modest cotton one Grace had carefully pressed—the three-year-old stood near the designated side table, her eyes wide as she clutched a worn, handmade stuffed bunny. The bunny had been sewn by Grace’s late husband, Aaron, from an old flannel shirt. It was missing one button eye, but to Lily, it was the center of the universe.
"Look, Mommy! Lights!" Lily pointed toward the massive crystal chandeliers.
"Yes, sweetie. Keep your voice down, remember?" Grace whispered, adjusting her server’s apron. She felt entirely out of place, a specter of domestic labor moving among the titans of industry.
Across the room, Nathaniel stood at the center of a circle of political figures and foreign investors. He looked impeccably handsome in his bespoke tuxedo, but his gaze kept drifting away from the conversation, tracking the small flash of yellow near the fireplace. Vivien clung to his side like a trophy, laughing loudly at jokes she wasn't listening to, her eyes darting around to ensure the society photographers caught every angle of her profile.
At exactly 9:00 PM, the orchestra slowed to a gentle hum. Vivien excused herself from Nathaniel's side, gesturing to a server to bring out Lily's small birthday cupcake.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Vivien announced into a wireless microphone, her face a picture of benevolent perfection. "Before we celebrate our engagement, we have a very special little milestone in the Callaway household. The daughter of our beloved house-keeper, young Lily, is turning three tonight!"
A polite ripple of applause went through the crowd. Lily, hearing her name, beamed and began singing "Happy Birthday" to herself under her breath, her small feet shuffling on the polished marble.
But as Vivien walked toward the side table, her eyes locked onto the handmade flannel bunny resting beside the cupcake. To Vivien, that ragged, lower-class toy was a blemish on her immaculate, million-dollar aesthetic.
What happened next occurred in a matter of seconds, witnessed by only a few who were paying close attention—and one man who saw everything.
Vivien leaned down, ostensibly to adjust the decorations. With a fluid, practiced motion, she pulled a sleek gold lighter from her clutch—the one she used for her imported cigarettes—and brushed the flame against the dry paper fringe of the birthday basket containing Lily's bunny and the wooden music box.
"Oh dear," Vivien gasped, stepping back instantly as a sharp plume of gray smoke rose from the table. "A stray ember from the fireplace must have caught the decorations!"

The paper fringe ignited instantly. Within seconds, the dry basket was engulfed, and the smell of burning flannel filled the air.
"My bunny!" Lily shrieked, her voice cutting through the ballroom like a knife. "Mommy, my bunny is hot! Help him!"
