Chapter 7 - The Dawn of a New Era

The dismantling of the Sterling syndicate was swift, legal, and absolute.
By afternoon, Arthur Sterling was sitting in a federal holding cell facing forty counts of conspiracy, kidnapping, and corporate racketeering. Evelyn was placed under immediate arrest, her diamond earrings confiscated as evidence of a botched criminal conspiracy. The media painted it as a massive federal crackdown on harbor corruption, but everyone in the city’s underworld knew the truth: Roman Calder had flexed his power, and the board had been cleared.
Back at the stone estate in Towson, the atmosphere had transformed entirely.
In the warm, spacious kitchen, nine-year-old Caleb sat at the marble island devouring a plate of chocolate chip cookies while Mrs. Gable watched him with a fond, amused smile.
Nora stood by the stove, stirring a pot of soup. She wore a soft, comfortable sweater instead of her stiff uniform.
The kitchen door opened, and Roman walked in. He had changed into a clean charcoal suit, but he looked tired, the hard edges of his usual demeanor softened by the events of the past forty-eight hours.
Caleb looked up from his cookies, narrowing his eyes suspiciously at the most feared man in Baltimore.
“You’re Mr. Calder,” Caleb said, not bothering to stand up.
Roman stopped, a faint, rare smile touching the corner of his mouth. “And you must be Caleb. Your sister talks about your security system.”
Caleb’s expression softened just a fraction. “She’s back home now, right? For good?”
“For good,” Roman promised, his dark eyes shifting from the boy to Nora.
Nora turned off the stove and walked over, wiping her hands on a cloth. “Thank you, Roman. For everything.”
“You don’t need to thank me, Nora,” he said, stepping closer, closing the distance between them in a way that made the kitchen feel suddenly very small. “You saved me from a life I didn't even realize was a prison. I’m not letting you go back to being invisible.”
Caleb cleared his throat loudly, pointing a cookie at them. “Hey. I’m sitting right here.”
May you like
Roman laughed—a rich, genuine sound that echoed off the stone walls, startling Mrs. Gable into dropping a tea towel.
Nora blushed, her eyes shining with unshed tears of relief and a new, unfamiliar warmth.
