Chapter 9 - The Reckoning at the Door

At 3:00 PM, a white, unmarked medical transport van pulled into the driveway of the Blake home.
David was sitting in the living room, holding his mother’s hand. Evelyn was dressed in clean clothes, her wheelchair recovered and fully charged by David earlier that morning. She was terrified, but she trusted her son.
Rebecca walked into the living room, her face bright with expectation. "The transport team is here, David. Are you ready?"
"I’m ready," David said, standing up.
The front door opened, and two men in blue scrubs entered the foyer. Behind them, wearing a dark suit and carrying a clipboard, was Marcus Vance, posing as the medical administrator.
"Mr. Blake?" Marcus asked, stepping forward with a professional, practiced smile. "I’m Dr. Vance. We’re here to assist with your mother’s transition."
David looked at Marcus, then at Rebecca, who was standing beside him, her face filled with triumphant relief. She thought she had won. She thought the money was hers, the house was hers, and the old woman was gone.
"You can cut the act, Marcus," David said, his voice quiet, vibrating with a lethal, icy calm.
The smile on Marcus’s face froze. "Excuse me?"
"I said, cut the act," David repeated, pulling his phone from his pocket and pressing play on a video file.
The audio of their 2:00 AM conversation filled the quiet foyer, their own voices discussing the theft, the Cayman accounts, and the plan to lock Evelyn away in a state facility.
Rebecca’s face went completely white. She took a step back, her eyes darting toward the front door. "David... what is this? That’s... that’s a forgery. That’s not my voice."
"I have the hidden cameras, Rebecca," David said, pointing to the fake ivy plant on the crown molding. "I have the network logs. I have the Delaware corporation filings for Apex Properties. And I have the federal arrest warrant for Marcus Vance’s bank fraud in Oregon."
Marcus didn't hesitate. He dropped the clipboard and lunged toward the door, intending to run for the van.
The door was kicked open from the outside.
Four armed police officers, led by Detective Sarah Miller, rushed into the foyer with their weapons drawn.
"Police! Don't move! Hands where I can see them!"
Marcus was slammed against the wall, his hands cuffed behind his back in a matter of seconds. Rebecca screamed, falling to her knees as Sarah Miller stepped forward, pulling her hands behind her back and clicking the steel cuffs into place.

"David, please!" Rebecca sobbed, her elegant facade completely shattered into a mess of snot and tears. "I did it for us! I did it for our future! Marcus forced me to do it! He threatened to kill me!"
"Save it for the judge, Rebecca," David said, turning his back on her. "You are a monster. And our marriage never existed."
