Chapter 3 - The Summons at the Penthouse

By two o'clock in the afternoon, Diego had been physically locked out of his own corporate headquarters by private security guards acting on orders from the newly appointed court-mandated receiver. His corporate phone had been remotely wiped, his company email address deactivated, and his luxury SUV—leased through the corporate fleet—towed from the parking garage before he could even retrieve his briefcase from the trunk.

Desperate, humiliated, and running on pure adrenaline, Diego took a taxi across the city to the ultra-exclusive residential tower in Polanco where he had been keeping his secret apartment for Vanessa.

He needed money. He needed his passport, his hidden stash of cash, and a plan to flee the country before federal investigators issued a formal arrest warrant and seized his remaining personal property.

He swiped his key card at the lobby entrance of the Torre Esmeralda.

The glass security door clicked open. Diego hurried toward the private elevator bank, keeping his head down, hoping none of the building's residents would recognize him from the society pages of Reforma.

He pressed the button for the penthouse floor.

When the elevator doors slid open on the thirtieth floor, Diego walked down the carpeted hallway and inserted his key into the lock of apartment 301.

The key turned, but the deadbolt clicked from the inside.

Diego frowned, banging his fist against the heavy walnut door. "Vanessa! Open up! It's me!"

The lock turned, and the door swung open.

Standing in the entryway was not Vanessa in a silk robe, but two tall men in dark charcoal suits, wearing crisp white shirts and federal identification badges pinned to their lapels.

"Diego Paredes?" the older agent asked, his voice flat and authoritative.

Diego stepped back, his hands rising defensively. "Who are you? What are you doing in my apartment?"

"Agent Morales, Federal Attorney General's Office," the man said, flashing a laminated credential before sliding it back into his pocket. "We have a federal search and seizure warrant for this residence, issued under case file 489-FC-2026."

Before Diego could protest, Vanessa appeared from the direction of the master bedroom. She wasn't wearing her usual designer lounge wear; she was dressed in a simple travel outfit, dragging a large Louis Vuitton suitcase behind her. Her eyes were red-rimmed, and her face was flushed with anger and panic.

"Diego!" Vanessa cried out, rushing toward him. "Thank God you're here! These men are insane! They broke into the apartment an hour ago, and they're saying all my jewelry, my car, and my bank accounts are being seized as 'proceeds of illicit financial enrichment'!"

Diego caught her by the shoulders, his own panic flaring. "What are you talking about? Your accounts are in your name!"

"They’re tied to corporate consulting fees from Paredes Materials!" Vanessa screamed, tears of frustration spilling down her cheeks. "The agents said every single check you wrote me for the past eighteen months was funded through embezzled corporate reserves! They're treating me like a criminal accomplice!"

Agent Morales stepped between them, gesturing toward the living room where two other investigators were packing expensive art pieces and designer handbags into brown cardboard evidence boxes.

"Mr. Paredes, Ms. Cole," Agent Morales said calmly. "You are both required to remain within the jurisdiction of Mexico City pending preliminary judicial hearings. Your passports have been flagged at all international ports of entry, and an official freeze has been placed on all movable and immovable assets associated with your joint expenditures."

Diego stared at Vanessa, the horrifying realization washing over him like freezing water.

In her pursuit of luxury, Vanessa had spent the last two years happily accepting corporate-funded gifts, luxury vacations, and apartment leases, never once questioning where the money came from. Now, every single transaction had become a digital handcuff binding her directly to his financial crimes.

"You can't do this," Diego muttered, his voice hollow. "I have rights. I want to speak to my lawyer."

"Your attorney, Mr. Morales, withdrew from your representation forty-five minutes ago after discovering that his retainer was paid from the same frozen corporate trust," Agent Morales replied smoothly. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small white business card, holding it out toward Diego.

"If you wish to discuss cooperation terms, asset restitution, or a potential plea arrangement with the primary complainant," Agent Morales added, "here is the direct contact information for the legal representative handling the restructuring."

Diego slowly reached out and took the card between his trembling fingers.

He looked down at the heavy cardstock.

Printed in elegant, understated black typography was a single name and a direct phone number:

EMILIA LOZANO-PAREDES Managing Director & General Counsel Lozano Capital Holdings

Diego stood in the center of the apartment as the federal agents continued packing up Vanessa’s belongings around him. The penthouse that had once been his secret sanctuary of power and pleasure now felt like a concrete tomb.

She was his prosecutor, his landlord, and his jailer.
