HE SAID HE “TAUGHT OUR DAUGHTER A LESSON” BEFORE LEAVING HER ON THE BALCONY AND GOING GOLFING.

HOURS LATER, HE RETURNED HOME… LOOKED DOWN… AND FROZE AT THE BRIGHT RED STAIN ON THE GROUND BELOW.
THE TRUTH WAS EVEN WORSE THAN HE EXPECTED…
When my husband Tyler said he was “disciplining” our three-year-old daughter, Lily, I thought he meant a time-out in her bedroom.
I was at the grocery store when he texted me: “She kept crying for you, so I put her where she can think about it. Haha.”
Something about the “haha” made my stomach turn.
I called him immediately. He didn’t answer. Then he sent a picture.
Lily was standing on the balcony of our fifth-floor apartment, barefoot, clutching her stuffed rabbit against her chest. The sliding glass door behind her was closed.
I dropped the groceries right in the aisle.
I called again and again. Nothing.
Then one more text came in: “Relax. She can’t open the door. I’m golfing with Mark. Back in a couple hours.”
I don’t remember driving home. I only remember screaming at every red light.
When I reached our building, I saw neighbors gathered outside, staring upward. My knees nearly gave out.
Then I saw the bright red stain on the concrete below our balcony.
For one horrible second, I stopped breathing.
But then I heard Lily crying.
She was not on the ground.
The red stain was paint.
A broken red paint bucket had exploded across the pavement.
And beside it stood my neighbor, Mrs. Harris, holding Lily in her arms.
Lily was trembling, but alive.
Mrs. Harris had heard Lily sobbing from the balcony. She called the fire department while another neighbor grabbed a ladder from maintenance. One firefighter climbed up from the balcony next door and pulled my daughter to safety.
The paint bucket had fallen when Lily, terrified and desperate, kicked it through the balcony railing.
When Tyler finally came home, sunburned and laughing with his golf bag over his shoulder, he looked down from the balcony and saw the red ground.
His face went white.
I stood behind him and said, “That’s what you thought happened, isn’t it?”
He turned around slowly.
The police were already in our living room.

And for the first time all day, Tyler had nothing funny to say.
