Chapter 3 - The Edge of the Blade

At 2:04 in the morning, Alessio Romano burst into his infant son’s nursery with a loaded handgun and found the new nanny pinning the baby to a changing table.

Three-month-old Leo was blue.

Not pale. Not merely struggling.

Blue.

His small body lay limp beneath Fiona’s forearm while she forced his mouth open and pushed a narrow metal instrument deep into her throat.

“Get your hands off my son!”

Alessio’s roar shook the glass in the nursery windows. He raised the weapon until its barrel hovered inches from Fiona’s temple.

She did not turn around.

She did not beg.

She did not even look at him.

“Shoot me,” she said through clenched teeth, “and Leo dies.”

The most feared man in Chicago tightened his finger against the trigger.

Outside, an October storm battered the fortified Lake Forest estate. Rain lashed the windows, thunder rolled across Lake Michigan, and every instinct Alessio possessed told him that the woman in front of him was murdering the only person he had left to love.

Then Fiona shouted the one command no living man had ever dared give him.

“Shut up and give me five seconds.”

Alessio froze. His finger hovered on the trigger, trembling—not with fear, but with a terrifying, uncalculated surge of raw panic.

With a lightning-fast jerk of her wrist, Fiona twisted the metal tracheotomy stylet inside Leo’s restricted airway, clearing a thick mucous plug that had completely blocked his collapsed windpipe.

A sharp, desperate squeak broke the silence.

Leo gasped, his small chest heaving as pink rushed back into his lips. He let out a furious, healthy cry that echoed off the nursery walls.

Fiona collapsed back against the changing table, her breath coming in ragged gasps, her hands slick with sweat and blood.

Alessio lowered the gun slowly, his knees feeling suddenly weak. He dropped the weapon onto the rug, rushed past Fiona, and snatched his son into his arms, pressing the crying infant against his chest.

"Leo... Leo, I've got you," Alessio choked out, his voice cracking with a raw, shattered vulnerability that no enemy had ever heard.

Fiona slid down the side of the changing table until she sat on the floor, burying her face in her hands as her entire body shook.

Dominic appeared in the doorway, breathless and wide-eyed, holding a service pistol. "Alessio! What—what happened?"

"His airway sealed," Fiona whispered from the floor, her voice cracking. "If I had waited... if you had shot me... he would have suffocated in ten seconds."

Alessio stared down at Fiona. The anger, the suspicion, the paranoia that had defined his existence since Elena’s murder evaporated, leaving behind a stark, burning realization.

She had risked her life—and stared down the barrel of a loaded gun wielded by a violent crime boss—just to save his son.
