PART 3

By midnight, the Arriaga mansion no longer looked like the home of one of Mexico's most respected families.

It looked like a crime scene.

Investigators moved through offices.

Computers were seized.

Boxes of records disappeared into evidence vans.

Doña Amparo spent hours insisting there had been some misunderstanding.

Nobody listened.

Meanwhile, Mariana sat quietly in a conference room at the district prosecutor's office.

A female detective handed her a cup of coffee.

“You could have reported this years ago.”

Mariana stared into the cup.

“I know.”

“Why didn't you?”

She thought about her parents.

About the shame.

About the fear.

About every bruise she had hidden beneath makeup.

“Because I believed him.”

The detective nodded.

Victims often do.

The next morning, news channels exploded with the story.

Financial fraud.

Domestic abuse.

Money laundering investigations.

Corruption.

Every hour brought new revelations.

The Arriaga family empire began collapsing faster than anyone imagined.

Banks froze accounts.

Investors withdrew support.

Business partners denied knowing anything.

The same people who once fought for invitations to the Arriaga mansion now avoided answering their calls.

Three days later, Leonardo was formally arrested.

As officers escorted him toward a waiting vehicle, reporters shouted questions from every direction.

Leonardo spotted Mariana standing across the street.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then he said quietly:

“You ruined everything.”

Mariana shook her head.

“No, Leonardo. You did.”

The vehicle door closed.

And the man who once controlled her disappeared behind dark glass.
