Chapter 6 - The Shadows Dispersed

The winter wind still blew through the abandoned industrial lot on the east side of Cleveland, but the old plywood shack was empty.
One month after the meeting at the precinct, a small, neat brick house in a quiet, tree-lined neighborhood near the park had a new name on the mailbox: Walker.
Lena sat on the warm, carpeted living room floor, watching Lily and June build a massive tower out of colorful wooden blocks. There was no cold wind slipping through the walls here; the heating hummed quietly in the basement, and the kitchen cupboard was filled with fresh fruit, milk, and bread.
The house hadn't been bought with the reward money. It had been provided under a permanent, iron-clad trust established by Mercer Holdings for "services rendered to the estate"—a legal transfer that kept Lena and her daughters safe from any corporate or criminal retaliation.
A soft knock came at the front door.
Lena opened it to find Arthur Mercer standing on the porch. He wasn't wearing his tailored corporate suit today; he wore a simple wool coat, and in his arms was baby Julian, looking healthy, chubby, and warm.
"We were in the neighborhood," Arthur said, a genuine, rare smile softening his sharp features. "Julian wanted to see his rescuers."
Lily and June rushed to the door, their faces clean, their laughter bright as they reached out to touch the baby's tiny fingers.
"He likes you," June said, pointing to the baby, who was looking at Lily with his dark, glassy eyes.
May you like
"He remembers," Lily whispered, her small hand wrapping around the baby's fist.
Lena looked at Arthur, then at her daughters, and realized that sometimes, the things you find in the dirt aren't trash at all—they are the keys to a life you never knew you were allowed to dream of.
