Chapter 7 - The Final Chess Move

By noon, the federal strike force had arrived—not to raid the Valentino estate, but to clean up the mess left behind by Victor Romano's botched hit squad.
In Chicago politics, when a war between syndicates ended, the side that stayed standing usually got to write the terms of surrender. By sunset, federal prosecutors had quietly closed their files on Marcus Valentino, conveniently rerouting their attention toward a series of newly discovered offshore accounts belonging to a certain prominent North Side dock owner named Victor Romano.
Inside the library of the Barrington estate, the fire crackled warmly in the grand stone hearth, casting long, golden shadows across the bookshelves.
Elena sat in a velvet armchair by the window, watching the rain finally clear away to reveal a pale, amber sunset breaking through the clouds.
Lucia sat cross-legged on the rug at her feet, carefully coloring a picture of a rabbit with a brand-new box of crayons while humming a tune she had invented herself.
The door opened softly, and Marcus walked in, setting a heavy leather briefcase down on the edge of his desk. He looked tired, the hard lines of his face softened by a quiet, exhausted peace he hadn't felt in three years.
He walked across the room, knelt down beside Lucia on the rug, and gently stroked her dark hair.
"What are you drawing, princess?" Marcus asked, his voice gentle.
Lucia looked up, her enormous dark eyes shining with intelligence and absolute safety. She pointed a small, crayon-stained finger at the paper.
It was a drawing of a house—a big stone house surrounded by tall iron gates, with three figures standing together on the front lawn under a bright yellow sun.
"Us," Lucia said clearly, her voice sweet and musical in the quiet room.

Elena’s hand flew to her mouth, a fresh wave of happy tears spilling over her lashes as she looked across at Marcus.
Marcus pulled his daughter into his arms, burying his face in her hair, closing his eyes as the last ghosts of the past finally let go and drifted away into the dark Chicago night.
