Chapter 5 - The Ledger of the Forgotten

The next morning, the sun rose over the mountains of Mexico City, clearing away the gray smog and replacing it with a brilliant, clean winter light that flooded the gardens of the Bosques de las Lomas estate.

In the main kitchen, the air smelled of fresh coffee, cinnamon, and warm milk.

Teresa Mendoza stood by the marble counter, her hands trembling slightly as she prepared a fresh fruit platter. She hadn't slept all night. She had heard the shouting, the sirens, and the sound of heavy vehicles leaving the gates at 3:00 a.m., and she was certain that she and Camila were about to be turned out onto the street.

Camila sat on a wooden stool near the breakfast bar, her little stuffed rabbit tucked safely under her arm, her eyes fixed on the door.

The service entrance opened, and Alejandro stepped into the kitchen. He looked tired, the shadows under his eyes showing the weight of a long night spent at the federal prosecutor’s office, but his suit was gone, replaced by a comfortable gray sweater.

Teresa instantly set her knife down, her voice dropping into a whisper. "Mr. Alejandro... we have our bags packed in the service room. If... if you need us to leave today, we can go right now. I just wanted to thank you for everything you did for us before."

Alejandro stopped, looking at her with a soft, incredulous expression. "Leave? Teresa, why on earth would you leave?"

"Mrs. Renata said... she said if we came back into the kitchen, we were fired," Teresa said, looking down at the counter.

Alejandro walked over, sitting down on the stool next to Camila. He reached out and gently tapped the stuffed rabbit’s ear, making the little girl let out a small, bright giggle.

"Mrs. Renata was taken away by the federal police last night, Teresa," Alejandro said gently. "She won't be coming back to this house. Ever."

Teresa gasped, her hand moving to her mouth. "The police? What happened?"

"She wasn't who she said she was," Alejandro said, his voice serious but warm. "She was using this house to steal from hundreds of families across this country. She thought because she was born into wealth, the rules didn't apply to her. She thought people like you and Camila were invisible."

He stood up, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a small, official legal document bearing the corporate seal of Ferrer Cargo International. He placed it gently next to the fruit platter.

"As of eight o'clock this morning, the corporate board has approved the creation of the Ferrer Community Trust," Alejandro announced. "It’s a foundation funded by the recovery assets from the Alcázar lawsuits. The trust is going to pay off the outstanding debts of every driver and employee who worked for us during the breach. And it’s purchasing the apartment building in Naucalpan where you rent your room."

Teresa stared at the paper, her eyes filling with a sudden, overwhelming flood of tears. "Mr. Alejandro... I don't understand."

"The building belongs to the trust now, Teresa," Alejandro smiled, his own eyes bright with emotion. "Which means you don't have a landlord anymore. The apartment is yours. Permanently. And your salary at this estate is being doubled to include a full medical stipend for Camila’s treatments."

Teresa sank into a chair, her shoulders shaking as she wept—not from fear, not from the humiliation of yesterday, but from the incredible, beautiful weight of security. Camila instantly scrambled off her stool, running to her mother’s side and throwing her tiny arms around her knees.

"Don't cry, Mommy," Camila said, holding up her stuffed rabbit. "The nice man gave us the honey biscuits, remember?"

Alejandro leaned down, his large, scarred hand resting gently on Teresa’s shoulder. "Go home for the weekend, Teresa. Take Camila to the park. Eat a dinner that you don't have to hide. When you come back on Monday, the kitchen will be completely yours."
