Chapter 4 - The Billionaire's Reckoning

The silence in the ballroom stretched so tight it felt as though a single word could snap it.
Walter Ashford stood frozen on the dais, his knuckles white as he gripped the polished wooden podium. The five hundred richest people in Chicago were no longer laughing. Instead, hundreds of glowing phone screens were pointed directly at him, broadcasting every twitch of his jaw and every bead of sweat on his forehead to the digital world.
"You... you cheated," Walter stammered, his voice losing its booming confidence, cracking slightly under the sudden weight of public humiliation. "You're no ordinary server—"
"I am an employee of this hotel," Claire interrupted, her voice steady and echoing clearly through the hall. "Just as Luis is. Just as the kitchen staff, the security guards, and the cleaning crews are. People you expect to absorb your insults because of what is in your bank account."
Ethan stepped up beside Claire, looking at his father with a look of profound disgust. "The deal was made in front of witnesses, Dad. And the cameras caught every second of it. Apologize."
Walter looked around the room, seeking support from his wealthy peers, but he found only averted gazes and whispering mouths. The elite didn't care about Walter Ashford; they cared about optics, and Walter was currently a sinking ship.
With trembling hands, Walter walked down the dais, his boots clicking heavily against the marble floor. He stopped a few feet away from Claire, his face burning red with humiliation.
"I..." Walter choked out, the word tasting like ash in his mouth. "I apologize... to all of you. For my conduct."
"Louder, Mr. Ashford," Claire said without flinching. "So the people in the kitchens can hear you."
Walter swallowed hard, closing his eyes in defeat. "I apologize to every employee of Ashford Tower! For my arrogance and disrespect!"
A cheer erupted from the service doors at the back of the hall, where Luis and a dozen other staff members had gathered to watch.
Claire didn't wait for Walter to finish his retreat. She turned on her heel, picked up her service tray, and walked steadily toward the exit.
"Claire! Wait!"
Ethan’s voice called out behind her. He hurried across the floor, catching up to her just as she reached the grand double doors leading to the service corridor.
"You can't just walk away after that," Ethan said, panting slightly, his eyes shining with genuine admiration. "Who are you? Really?"
Claire looked down at her worn black shoes, then up at the young man who had stood beside her when everyone else laughed.

"I used to be someone who let a crash define the rest of my life," Claire said softly. "Tonight, I remembered I'm still a dancer."
She slipped through the doors before he could reply.
