Chapter 10 - A New Dawn in Boston

An hour later, I stepped out of the downtown skyscraper and into the crisp, invigorating Boston air.

The winter wind kissed my cheeks, carrying the faint, salty scent of the nearby harbor. I walked down the stone steps toward the curb, where a sleek, black chauffeured SUV was idling by the entrance.

The rear door opened, and Mrs. Alvarez—our wonderful neighbor and lifelong friend—stepped out holding baby Noah in her arms, bundled snugly in a thick white cashmere snowsuit.

When Noah saw me, his little face lit up with a gummy, joyful smile, and he let out a happy little gurgle, reaching his tiny hands out toward me.

My heart melted instantly. I rushed forward, scooped my son up into my arms, and buried my face against his soft, warm neck, breathing in the sweet scent of baby shampoo and pure, innocent life.

“How is my favorite little man doing?” I whispered, pressing a soft kiss to his forehead.

“He’s been an absolute angel the whole morning,” Mrs. Alvarez smiled warmly, resting a gentle hand on my shoulder. “You ready to head home, counselor?”

I looked down at Noah, then glanced up toward the towering glass-and-steel skyline of downtown Boston—a city that had once felt like a cage governed by powerful, arrogant men who believed there were never any consequences for their cruelty.

I had entered this world as a broken, terrified young mother trapped in a gilded prison. I walked out of it as Grace Sterling: a brilliant litigator, a fierce protector, and the sole architect of her own destiny.

“Yes, Mrs. Alvarez,” I smiled, adjusting Noah securely against my chest as the afternoon sun broke through the winter clouds, bathing us in a brilliant, golden glow. “Let’s go home.”
