Chapter 2 - The Wrath of the Architect

Time seemed to fracture.
For Dante Marino, the cacophony of the firefight evaporated, replaced by a profound, terrifying vacuum. He didn't see the incoming bullets. He didn't hear Tommy shouting warnings. He saw only Clara’s body crumpling onto the blood-slicked concrete, her white uniform turning red.
Something inside Dante broke.
It wasn't the cold, calculated anger of a mob boss managing a turf war. It was a primordial, howling fury—the rage of a man whose soul had just been ripped out through his ribs.
“NO!”
Dante didn't take cover. He stood straight up in the open line of fire, a towering avatar of death. Bullets buzzed past his ears and chewed into the sleeves of his coat, but he didn't even flinch. He raised his SIG Sauer with both hands, his arms locked like hydraulic steel.
Bang. Bang. Bang. Bang.
Four rapid shots. Four headshots.
The flanking gunman who had fired the volley went down like a snapped marionette. Dante didn't stop. He advanced across the open floor with terrifying speed, emptying magazine after magazine into the remaining members of Victor Russo’s strike team.
The hit squad, accustomed to ambushing terrified rivals who begged for their lives, suddenly realized they were hunting something far worse than a criminal. They were hunting an executioner.
Within thirty seconds, the garage fell deathly silent, save for the hiss of a ruptured radiator and the frantic, echoing sirens approaching from the street above.
Seven of Russo’s men lay dead on the concrete. The remaining three broke and ran for the secondary exit, but Tommy cut them down before they reached the stairwell door.
Dante dropped his empty gun. He didn't care about the survivors. He didn't care about Victor Russo. He sprinted the final ten feet to where Clara lay motionless, dropping heavily to his knees in the pool of her blood.
“Clara. Clara, look at me,” Dante choked out, his voice cracking—a sound no living soul had ever heard escape the lips of the Marino syndicate boss.
He slid his hands beneath her, lifting her fragile, bleeding body against his chest as if she were made of spun glass. Her head loll back, her face stark white, her breathing shallow and ragged.

“Boss! Medic team is staging at the ramp, they’re coming down now!” Tommy yelled, rushing over with a trauma pack, his own hands shaking as he pressed a sterile gauze pad directly onto Clara’s chest wound.
“If she dies,” Dante whispered, his voice trembling with a terrifying, frozen menace, “I’m going to personally skin Victor Russo alive and feed him to the harbor rats. Move!”
