Chapter 1 - The Tuesday Rule

"Because Tuesdays are the middle of the week, and the middle is when people forget to look around," Lucy said simply, brushing a few stray peanut butter crumbs off the table.

Claire stared at the drawing. The ink from the cheap marker had bled slightly into the thick linen napkin, but the three stick figures were distinct. The one with the wheels was drawn with the exact same bold, confident strokes as the other two. It was the first time in four years that anyone had depicted her wheelchair without making it the entire focus of the image.

Mason offered a quiet, apologetic smile as he slung his worn tool belt over his shoulder. "Tuesdays are also the days we get tacos if I finish my site audits early. It's a bit of a tradition. Come on, Lucy, let's let Ms. Whitmore get back to her day."

"Claire," Claire corrected gently, her fingers tracing the edge of the napkin. "Thank you for the drawing, Lucy. I’ll keep it."

As Mason led his daughter back toward the rooftop service elevators, the atmosphere on the terrace shifted immediately. The low hum of corporate gossip resumed, but the glances directed at Claire’s table were no longer just distant or pitying. They were bewildered. The untouchable, iron-willed CEO of Northstar Robotics had just spent twenty minutes laughing with a contractor's child.

Claire looked down at her cold lunch, suddenly realizing she actually wanted to eat it. But before she could pick up her fork, her tablet buzzed heavily against the glass table. A high-priority notification from the legal department flashed across the screen.
