Chapter 6: The Christmas Shelter

The radio transmission changed everything.

Detective Maria Alvarez was already halfway to her SUV before dispatch repeated the address.

"Confirmed sighting. Male matching Daniel Mercer's description entered the Jefferson Elementary Christmas Shelter approximately three minutes ago. More than sixty civilians inside. Numerous children present."

Every officer nearby started moving.

Christmas was over.

Now it was a rescue.

I stood frozen beside the patrol car.

"No."

Maria turned.

"You stay here."

"My daughter is here."

"So are federal agents."

"I'm talking about those children."

I looked toward the ambulance where Noah and Lily were being examined by paramedics.

"If he's heading toward another shelter full of kids..."

I couldn't finish.

Maria understood anyway.

She stepped closer.

"He isn't running randomly."

"No."

"He's going somewhere familiar."

Emily suddenly spoke from behind me.

"He likes Christmas."

Every adult turned toward her.

She swallowed.

"He always said Christmas was when nobody noticed missing children."

Silence fell.

The words chilled everyone more than the winter wind.

Maria immediately grabbed her radio.

"Dispatch, advise responding units the suspect has demonstrated organized offender behavior tied specifically to holiday gatherings. Evacuate children first."

The response came instantly.

"Copy."

Within seconds the convoy of police vehicles pulled away.

Red and blue lights disappeared into the snowy streets.

Only a handful of officers remained to guard the house.

An FBI Special Agent approached me.

"My name is Daniel Brooks."

He handed me a business card.

"I need to ask you several questions."

"I'll answer anything."

He opened a notebook.

"When was the first time your uncle entered your family's life?"

I frowned.

"I was six."

"And before that?"

"I don't remember him."

He nodded slowly.

"Neither do your school records."

"What?"

"We've already contacted your elementary school."

"There are no family photographs containing Robert before your father's funeral."

The realization struck me like cold water.

He had appeared...

Only after my father died.

Brooks continued.

"Your mother introduced him as your uncle."

"Nobody questioned it."

"Small towns rarely do."

He paused.

"We believe Daniel Mercer deliberately targeted grieving families."

People who had lost someone.

People too exhausted to question comforting strangers.

I remembered my mother's words after Dad's funeral.

"Robert will help us now."

I had been too young to wonder where Robert had suddenly come from.

Now I understood.

He hadn't returned.

He had arrived.

My phone vibrated.

Mark.

"Claire..."

His voice cracked.

"You need to come to the hospital."

Fear exploded inside me.

"Emily?"

"No."

"Lily."

Twenty minutes later we reached County General Hospital.

The pediatric ICU hallway smelled of antiseptic and coffee.

Families sat wrapped in blankets.

Christmas music still played softly through ceiling speakers.

It sounded almost cruel.

Lily lay awake for the first time.

She looked impossibly small beneath the hospital blankets.

When she saw me...

She smiled.

A tiny smile.

But real.

"Hi."

I sat beside her bed.

"How are you feeling?"

"My grandma says I'm safe."

"You are."

She stared at the ceiling.

"He won't stop."

"What do you mean?"

"He always comes back."

The room grew quiet.

Then Lily whispered something that made every investigator in the room stop writing.

"He has another house."

Agent Brooks looked up instantly.

"What?"

"He said basements get old."

Maria leaned closer.

"Lily..."

"Do you know where?"

The little girl closed her eyes.

"I don't know."

"But I know what he called it."

"What?"

She opened her eyes again.

"The Christmas House."

No one spoke.

Brooks slowly repeated the words.

"The Christmas House."

Lily nodded.

"He said every Christmas needs a home."

Brooks immediately left the room.

Within moments phones started ringing across the hallway.

Maps appeared.

Property records.

Old investigations.

Cold cases.

Noah, still clutching his stuffed dinosaur, quietly added,

"He said there were presents."

"What presents?"

"The boxes."

"What boxes?"

"The ones with names."

Maria crouched beside him.

"What kind of names?"

He thought for a long moment.

"Children's names."

An hour later...

The FBI found something.

A property.

Purchased eighteen years earlier under a shell company connected to Daniel Mercer.

An abandoned Victorian farmhouse...

Thirty miles outside town.

Locals called it...

The Christmas House.

Satellite photographs showed fresh tire tracks despite heavy snow.

Heat signatures inside.

Electricity still active.

Someone was there.

SWAT teams assembled immediately.

The operation commander addressed the room.

"If Mercer prepared one location..."

"He prepared another."

"If children are inside..."

"We move tonight."

Maria looked toward me.

"You cannot come."

I nodded.

"I know."

But my eyes remained fixed on the tactical map.

Something bothered me.

Something small.

Then I remembered.

"The key."

"What?"

"The silver key Emily gave me."

I reached into my coat pocket.

It wasn't there.

I searched again.

Nothing.

My stomach dropped.

"I had it."

Maria frowned.

"When?"

"In the basement."

"It disappeared."

One forensic officer hurried into the hallway carrying an evidence bag.

"Detective."

Maria turned.

"We found this inside Mercer's tunnel."

Inside the clear plastic bag...

Was the silver key.

Attached to it...

A tiny brass tag.

Stamped with three words.

Christmas House - North Door

Every officer in the hallway stared at it.

It wasn't just a key.

It was a map.

And somewhere beyond the snow-covered woods...

Behind that north door...

May you like

Daniel Mercer was waiting.
