Chapter 2 - The Open Tab

It had happened on a Tuesday in late autumn. I came home early from work with a splitting headache, completely exhausted from managing a complex corporate portfolio while six months pregnant. A cold, steady rain had soaked through my coat, and the apartment was unnaturally quiet.

Daniel was supposed to be at his downtown office until seven. Because of that, I almost ignored the soft, flickering light glowing from his home office door.

As I walked down the hallway to change into comfortable clothes, I noticed his computer screen illuminated the dim room. A locked Messenger conversation was still open and active on the display.

Throughout our entire relationship, I had never been the kind of paranoid wife who snooped through phones or checked private chats. I genuinely believed that trust was the foundational anchor of a marriage. But that afternoon, something cold and heavy settled in my chest, refusing to let me walk away.

I stepped into the office and looked down at the screen.

The name on the hidden chat was Chloe.

Chloe. Daniel’s college girlfriend. His first great love, or so he had always claimed before we met.

The newest message on the screen was time-stamped just two hours earlier. It thanked him profusely for taking the entire day off work to accompany her to an OB/GYN appointment. She told him the baby was healthy, developing right on schedule, and even mentioned that she had felt the baby kick while riding in the passenger seat of his car.

My own baby moved inside my womb at that exact second, as if sensing the betrayal rippling through the room.

I didn't scream. I didn't break down or shatter a lamp. A strange, eerie numbness washed over me, freezing my emotions into place.

I kept scrolling.

The message history went back months, tracing a timeline that overlapped directly with the early stages of my own pregnancy. Chloe had recently gone through a messy divorce and discovered she was unexpectedly pregnant. True to his savior complex, Daniel had stepped right back into her life. He had promised to take care of her rent, cover her mounting medical bills, buy her groceries, and provide for maternity clothes—whatever she needed to stay comfortable.

Then, my eyes caught a specific line in the chat log that hurt infinitely more than the physical affair itself.

“You don’t need to worry about Jennifer. I have a plan to handle that side of things.”

That side of things.

I was his legally wedded wife, carrying his child, building a home with him. And to him, I had been reduced to a logistical inconvenience—a problem to be managed and compartmentalized while he played the hero to another woman.

When I checked our shared bank records later that evening, the reality grew even uglier.

While Daniel had spent months lecturing me about household frugality, complaining that hiring a night nurse was an unnecessary “luxury,” and suggesting we buy a used, second-hand stroller to save money, he had quietly siphoned thousands of dollars out of our joint savings.

Wire transfers, cash withdrawals, online payments. By the time I stopped counting, the total amount funneled to Chloe had reached fifteen thousand dollars.

Most people in my position would have packed a suitcase, confronted their spouse in a screaming match, and thrown him out that very night.

Instead, I chose a different path.

I stayed completely calm. I took clear photographs of every single message on the screen. I recorded short video scrolls of the entire chat history, downloaded the bank transfers, and forwarded every piece of digital evidence to an encrypted cloud email account that Daniel didn't even know existed.

The next morning, before heading into my office, I had a private consultation with one of the top divorce attorneys in the city.

For weeks afterward, I played the role Daniel had carefully written for me: the grateful, exhausted pregnant wife, completely oblivious to what her husband was doing behind closed doors.

He mistook my icy silence for weakness. And that single, arrogant mistake made him utterly careless.
