Chapter 2 - The Playback of Treason

By midnight, the grand Moretti estate was under total lockdown.
Heavy iron gates were locked and chained. Twenty heavily armed guards in suit jackets patrolled the perimeter grounds with guard dogs. Nobody was allowed to enter, and nobody was allowed to leave.
In the master private quarters on the third floor—a luxurious suite equipped with bulletproof glass and reinforced steel doors—Sophia sat on a velvet sofa, holding a sleeping Emma in her lap. The little girl was wrapped in a soft cashmere blanket, her thumb tucked into her mouth, her pink rabbit backpack resting on the table beside her.
A private medical team, brought in under military-level secrecy by Alejandro’s personal physician, Dr. Harrison, had just finished examining both Alejandro and Emma.
“The adrenaline stabilized your airway, Mr. Moretti,” Dr Harrison reported, setting down his stethoscope. “If that child hadn't administered the epinephrine within two minutes of ingestion, your throat would have closed completely. You would have suffered brain death before the guards even noticed you were down.”
Alejandro stood near the fireplace, wearing a fresh white shirt, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows. He didn't look like a man who had almost died three hours ago. He looked like a storm gathering over a dark ocean.
“And the child?” Alejandro asked quietly.
“She’s completely fine, but she no longer has an emergency auto-injector,” Dr. Harrison noted. “Her mother explained she has a severe peanut allergy. Leaving her without an EpiPen is dangerous.”
Alejandro turned to his personal secretary, a stern woman named Elena. “Order fifty prescription auto-injectors immediately. Have them delivered to this house by helicopter before dawn. Keep ten in this room, ten in the kitchen, and give the rest to Sophia.”
Sophia looked up from the sofa, her eyes wide with disbelief. “Mr. Moretti... those cost hundreds of dollars each. I can’t pay for—”
“You will never pay for medicine again, Sophia,” Alejandro said, his dark eyes locking onto hers with absolute finality. “Neither will your daughter.”
He turned away and walked toward a massive mahogany control desk where a high-definition monitor was glowing in the dim light.
“Elena,” Alejandro commanded. “Pull up the cloud stream from the study camera. Timestamp: 10:15 PM.”
Sophia held her breath, leaning forward slightly as Elena tapped the keyboard.
The screen flickered, displaying the clear, high-frame-rate video of Alejandro’s study.
On the screen, the room was empty at 10:12 PM. The fire was crackling in the hearth. On the desk sat a crystal decanter of vintage Cabernet, along with a single glass.
At 10:14 PM, the study door pushed open silently.
A man stepped into the frame. He wore a dark suit, leather gloves, and walked with absolute familiarity toward the mahogany desk. He pulled a small glass vial from his inner vest pocket, unstoppered it, and poured a thick, yellowish liquid directly into the decanter. He swirled the wine gently, set the bottle back down, and stepped into the shadows near the bookshelf.
Sophia gasped, covering her mouth with her hand.
The face on the screen was crystal clear, caught under the bright overhead chandelier.
It was not a rival gang member. It was not an outside assassin.
It was Marco Bellini—Alejandro’s head of house security, the man who had worked for the Moretti family for twelve years, and the man who had stood over Alejandro’s collapsing body claiming he had just arrived.
On the video, two minutes later, Alejandro walked into the study, poured himself a glass of wine, took two sips, and immediately dropped the glass as his throat seized.
As Alejandro collapsed onto the marble, clawing at his neck, the camera captured Marco stepping out from the shadows.
Marco didn't call for help. He didn't run to get medicine. He stood over his dying boss, pulled out his wristwatch, and casually timed how long it took for Alejandro’s breathing to stop.
He was waiting for him to die.
And then, the video showed the study door pushing open, and a tiny girl in a yellow sweater and a pink rabbit backpack stepping into the frame.
The sight of Marco’s face twisting into shock as Emma injected the EpiPen was captured in devastating, unassailable detail.
Alejandro stood in front of the monitor, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the edge of the desk. The air in the room grew cold, thick, and suffocating.
“He didn't act alone,” Alejandro whispered, his voice dangerously calm. “Marco doesn't have the brains to source refined almond extract toxin. Someone paid him.”
“Boss,” Elena said softly, pulling up a second file. “We ran Marco’s private bank accounts thirty minutes ago. A wire transfer of two million dollars cleared from an offshore account in the Cayman Islands at 9:00 PM tonight. The originating entity belongs to the Valetti family.”
The Valettis—the chief rival criminal syndicate in Chicago, who had been trying to seize control of the Moretti shipping docks for six months.
Alejandro slowly closed his eyes, taking a deep, calculated breath. When he opened them, all emotion had been wiped from his face, replaced by a terrifying, frozen resolve.
He turned to look at Sophia and Emma.
“Elena,” Alejandro said. “Move Sophia and Emma into the primary safe room in the basement. Assign four of my personal loyal guards to stand outside the door. Nobody touches them.”
“Yes, Mr. Moretti,” Elena bowed.
Sophia stood up, holding Emma close. “What are you going to do?”

Alejandro walked over to the table, picked up Emma’s pink rabbit backpack, and gently handed it to Sophia.
“I am going to clean my house,” Alejandro said quietly.
