CHAPTER 3: TEN YEARS LATER

Ten years passed.
I was eighteen years old now.
The Sterling empire still existed, but it had changed.
No more greed.
No more fear.
No more secrets.
I stood on a stage in front of hundreds of children at the grand opening of the Sterling Foundation for Abandoned Children.
Beside me stood Mrs. Gable.
Her hair had turned silver.
But her smile remained exactly the same.
A reporter asked me one question.
“What saved your life that day?”
I smiled.
Then I reached into my purse.
The entire audience laughed when I pulled out an old pink plastic toy phone.
Scratched.
Faded.
Broken in places.
But priceless.
I answered softly.
“People think heroes wear capes.”
I looked toward Mrs. Gable.
“Sometimes heroes make your breakfast, read bedtime stories, and hold your hand when everyone else walks away.”
The audience erupted into applause.
Mrs. Gable wiped away tears.
That night, we visited my parents' graves.
I placed the pink phone beside Arthur’s headstone for a moment.
“Dad,” I whispered.
“We're okay now.”
The wind moved gently through the trees.
For the first time in my life…

The Sterling family story no longer belonged to betrayal.
It belonged to survival.
Because one barefoot eight-year-old girl walked into a courtroom…
May you like
And told the truth.
THE END.
