Chapter 5 - The Dawn of a New Empire

Three months later, the rainy Chicago autumn gave way to a crisp, biting winter.
The shadow war with the North Side had ended as quickly as it began, once Dominic exposed Julian’s treason and presented the evidence to the other syndicate bosses on a silver platter. The underworld recognized strength, but it respected absolute justice even more.
The old Aurelia restaurant was gone, replaced by a high-security private estate on the shores of Lake Michigan.
On a bright December afternoon, snow fell in thick, lazy flakes outside the floor-to-ceiling windows of a sunlit conservatory.
I sat at a grand mahogany table, reviewing architectural blueprints for a new chain of community art centers funded by the Vale Foundation—a project I now managed as the chief operations director.
Footsteps approached softly across the heated marble floor.
"You're working too late again, Claire," a deep, familiar voice murmured.
I looked up to see Dominic standing there, his coat unbuttoned, holding two steaming mugs of spiced cider. He looked less like a mafia boss and more like a man who had finally learned how to breathe.
Behind him skipped Audrey, her arms wrapped tightly around a brand-new, impeccably clean stuffed rabbit.
Noodle says you need a break, Audrey signed with a bright, gap-toothed smile, running over to my chair and leaning against my knee. Dad bought us hot chocolate.
I smiled, setting my pen down and pulling Audrey into a gentle hug.
"Tell Noodle," I said, translating my voice into smooth, practiced sign language, "that the boss of this house just ordered me to take a five-minute recess."
Dominic set the mugs down on the desk, leaned over, and placed a soft, lingering kiss on the top of my head before wrapping his strong arms around both of us.

The ghosts of the past—the bombings, the betrayals, the blood, and the fear—were gone, buried beneath the snow outside. For the first time in our lives, the silence wasn't terrifying anymore.
It was home.
