Chapter 2 - The Trap Beneath the Floorboards

The realization hit me like physical impact. The market meeting on Prince Street, the mason jar dropping, the blue star button rolling toward Alessandro’s shoe—none of it had been an accident.
“They planned it,” I whispered, stepping back against the mahogany bookshelves. “From the very beginning. They knew who Alessandro was, and they tracked me down weeks ago.”
Alessandro crossed the room in two long strides, his large hands gripping my shoulders. His touch was firm, grounding me against the sudden vertigo of fear.
“Look at me, Elena,” he commanded gently. “You and Emma were never targets of opportunity. You were chosen. Solari wanted to see how the Moretti empire reacts when a civilian enters our orbit. They wanted to find our soft spot.”
“I am not a soft spot,” I retorted, my chin lifting defensively, remembering how I had preserved the digital evidence on my phone.
“No,” Alessandro murmured, a faint, appreciative smile touching the corners of his mouth. “You proved that tonight when you outmaneuvered Marco’s detail by securing the file yourself. But that doesn’t make you invincible. It makes you a target they intend to break.”
Marco’s phone buzzed sharply against the desk. He answered on the second ring, listened for ten seconds, and cursed under his breath.
“Boss,” Marco interrupted, looking up. “The tech team finished decrypting the cloud sync from the dead man’s burner phone. They didn’t just pull photographs of Emma from tonight.”
Alessandro’s expression darkened. “What else?”
“Schedules. Floor plans of your Manhattan townhome. And a complete architectural breakdown of Elena’s restoration shop in Brooklyn,” Marco said grimly. “They’ve been watching her for six months. They knew she’d be at the Fall Gala because they planted the invitation through a compromised vendor.”
The room seemed to shrink. Six months. Long before Emma dropped her buttons on Prince Street, someone had been cataloging my life, waiting for the precise moment to weave us into the dangerous web of the Moretti family.
“They want a war,” Alessandro said softly, his voice dropping an octave into a tone so cold it made the air in the room feel brittle. “They thought by dangling a bride and child in front of me, they could dictate the terms. They miscalculated.”
He turned back to me, taking my hand in his. The calloused warmth of his palm sent a shiver straight up my arm.
“Pack your bags, Elena,” Alessandro ordered quietly. “You and Emma are moving into the upstate estate tonight. Total lockdown. No exceptions.”

“And if I refuse to hide?” I asked, refusing to back down.
“You aren’t hiding,” Alessandro replied, his dark gaze unwavering. “We are setting a counter-trap. And the first piece of bait will be the blue button.”
