Chapter 4 - The Healing of a Broken Empire

Two weeks later, the morning sun washed over the grand estate in Upper Westchester, turning the frost on the lawn into a brilliant blanket of silver.

Inside the nursery—a room that had remained locked and untouched for three years—the dust had been swept away. Pale yellow curtains fluttered in the breeze. A fresh crib, new children's books, and a collection of stuffed animals filled the space.

Lily sat cross-legged on the plush white rug, dressing her ragged stuffed rabbit in a tiny paper crown she had made herself.

Adrian rolled his wheelchair quietly across the threshold.

Lily looked up, her big brown eyes lighting up with an innocent, radiant joy that made the heavy armor around Adrian’s heart melt completely.

“Daddy!” she cheered, scrambling across the floor and climbing straight into his lap, throwing her arms around his neck just like she had on the first day.

Adrian caught her, burying his face against her shoulder, wrapping his arms around her with a fierce, protective love. For the first time in three years, the ghosts of the past didn't feel like a suffocating weight. They felt like a blessing that had guided this little girl right to his doorstep.

“Are you still my dad tomorrow?” Lily asked softly, pulling back to look him in the eye.

Adrian smiled—a real, genuine smile that reached his eyes, erasing years of sorrow.

“Not just tomorrow, princess,” Adrian whispered, kissing the top of her head. “Every day. For the rest of my life.”

Downstairs, the Moretti syndicate underwent its final transformation. The illegal shipments were halted, the violent enforcement cells were dismantled, and the vast wealth of the empire was redirected entirely into legitimate real estate, children’s hospitals, and educational foundations established in memory of Claire and Sophie.
