Chapter 6 - The Siege of Fifth Avenue

The secure panic room of the north wing was a windowless, concrete-reinforced cube hidden behind a sliding bookshelf in the master suite. It contained its own air filtration system, digital surveillance monitors, emergency medical supplies, and a direct satellite uplink to the Moretti empire’s global security grid.

Inside the dim, sterile space, Leo clung tightly to my neck, whimpering as the high-pitched wail of the estate’s perimeter security alarm began to shriek through the mansion’s speakers.

“Clara, I’m scared,” the boy whispered, burying his face in my sweater.

“Shh, buddy, I’ve got you,” I murmured, rocking him back and forth while my eyes were glued to the digital monitors mounted on the concrete wall.

Dante Russo’s face filled one of the screens from the ground-floor security station. He was kneeling behind an overturned mahogany desk, firing a suppressed submachine gun down the grand hallway toward the front entrance, where heavy glass doors were shattering into a thousand glittering pieces under a barrage of automatic gunfire.

“They breached the perimeter!” Dante shouted into his comm-link. “At least a dozen armed mercenaries in tactical gear. They’re bypassing the security grid—someone on the inside gave them the override codes!”

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. An inside job.

The monitors flickered as cameras in the grand foyer went dark one by one. Heavy combat boots echoed up the marble staircase—thud, thud, thud—getting closer and closer to our floor.

Then, a voice crackled over the intercom system from the hallway outside our suite.

“Dante! Give up the boy and the girl, and we make your execution quick. Fight back, and we burn this entire limestone tomb to the ground with all of you inside!”

Leo whimpered louder, his small body trembling violently in my arms.

I set him down gently on the padded cot inside the panic room, pulling the heavy steel door half-closed, keeping him out of direct sight. Then, I turned to the master control console.

My fingers flew across the emergency terminal. I didn't know anything about mafia tactics, but I knew logistics. I knew how security overrides worked from my days managing multi-million-dollar restaurant inventories and system networks.

The intercom voice roared again, closer this time—right outside the double doors of the nursery suite.

“We’re coming in!”

A massive, concussive BOOM echoed through the suite as an explosive charge blew the heavy oak doors off their hinges. Shrapnel and splinters rained across the nursery floor.

I watched on the monitor as three armed men in black tactical gear, wearing night-vision goggles and carrying assault rifles, swarmed into our suite. They methodically began clearing the rooms, kicking over furniture, smashing lamps, and heading straight toward the hidden master suite.

They were thirty seconds away from finding the sliding bookshelf.

And on the central communications screen, a red flashing warning light pulsed relentlessly: SATELLITE UPLINK LOST. SIGNAL JAMMED.

Ricardo was out of reach. The convoy had been ambushed, his communications were cut, and we were completely isolated inside a fortress that had just been turned into a slaughterhouse.

If we stayed inside the panic room, we were trapped in a concrete tomb.

If we tried to run, we walked straight into the crosshairs of professional killers.

I looked down at the emergency medical kit on the shelf, then spotted something else tucked behind a stack of encrypted radios: a heavy, black steel crowbar used for emergency door jams.

May you like

I reached out, wrapped my hands around the cold iron, and whispered a silent prayer to whatever guardian angel was listening.

It was time to fight back.
