Chapter 9 - A New Code

The war with Brooklyn never happened.

Faced with the humiliation on Fifth Street and the sudden, freezing diplomatic pressure from the other major syndicates who had no desire to see an all-out turf war destabilize the city's economy, the Castellano family quietly retreated across the river and stayed on their own side of the bridge.

My syndicate didn't expand into new territories, and we didn't push our margins. We consolidated, tightened our security, and focused on protecting what mattered.

Two months after the night on Fifth Street, on a crisp Sunday morning, I walked alone down the stone pathways of Saint Jude Cemetery.

The autumn leaves were turning gold and red, crunching softly beneath my leather boots. In my hand, I carried a single, perfect white rose.

I stopped in front of a small, polished marble headstone nestled beneath the sprawling branches of an old oak tree.

Elena Vasquez. Beloved Daughter. 2018 - 2025. Always in our hearts.

I knelt down, placing the white rose gently against the cool stone. Beside me, Bruno sat quietly, his head bowed as if paying his own silent respects to the little girl he had tried so hard to protect.

"She would have liked you," I whispered to the headstone, adjusting the flower. "She liked horses. And chocolate ice cream. And purple sneakers."

A gentle gust of wind rustled through the oak leaves overhead, carrying the scent of damp earth and falling rain.

I stood up, dusting off my knees, and looked out over the quiet cemetery hills.

For thirty years, I had believed that the underworld was a place where only the ruthless survived—where loyalty was a commodity, betrayal was inevitable, and a man's worth was measured by the blood on his hands.

But standing there in the sunlight, with my faithful dog by my side and a city at peace, I realized something fundamental had changed.

True strength wasn't about the wars you won. It was about the lines you drew in the dirt and refused to let anyone cross—even if it meant standing alone against an army.
