Chapter 3 - The Shadow at the Window

The digital clock on the microwave read 2:14 a.m. on the third night.

Arthur hadn't turned off the lights in the living room. He sat in his armchair, a heavy brass fireplace poker resting against his knee, staring out the frost-covered front window. The snow had stopped, leaving the streets buried in a thick, eerie white blanket that deadened all sound.

The girls were asleep on the sofa, wrapped tightly in each other's arms.

Arthur’s mind raced through the name Sterling. Thirty minutes after that chilling phone call two nights ago, he had dug deep into his academic database access. He found a recent, heavily buried financial scandal: Julian Sterling, the ruthless patriarch of the Sterling shipping conglomerate, had passed away six months ago. His son, Richard Sterling, had taken over the board. But a bitter, vicious inheritance war had broken out over secret trusts, illegitimate heirs, and corporate restructuring.

Twin girls. Five years old. The granddaughters of the billionaire patriarch, born from a secret marriage that the corporate board had spent millions trying to erase from public record.

They weren't just abandoned. They had been hunted.

Suddenly, a low, deep rumble vibrated through the quiet street outside.

Arthur stood up instantly, his heart slamming against his ribs. He crept to the front window, peering cautiously through a small cleared circle in the frost.

Gliding slowly down Juniper Street, its polished black paint reflecting the amber glow of the streetlights like a sleek predator, was a massive, tinted-window limousine.

It didn't have its headlights on. It rolled forward in total, deliberate silence, coming to a smooth, unhurried halt directly in front of Arthur’s faded blue door.

The back door of the limousine opened. A tall man in a sharp charcoal suit and leather gloves stepped out onto the snowy pavement, his breath pluming in the freezing air. He didn't look around. He walked with absolute, terrifying certainty straight up Arthur’s front walkway.

Knock. Knock. Knock.

Three heavy, measured raps echoed through the small house.

Behind Arthur, a small gasp sounded. He turned his head. Nell was awake, sitting bolt upright on the sofa, her hands clamped over Nora’s mouth to keep her from whimpering.

"Stay here," Arthur whispered fiercely, his voice trembling despite his best efforts. He gripped the heavy brass fireplace poker tighter in his right hand.

He walked across the creaking floorboards, reached the front door, and flipped the deadbolt.

He pulled the door open.

The cold night air rushed in, carrying the scent of expensive leather and expensive cologne. Standing on the porch was not a thug or a kidnapper, but a man in his late forties with razor-sharp facial features, cold gray eyes, and a posture that screamed corporate executioner.

Behind him, leaning against the open door of the black limousine, stood two heavy-set men in identical suits, watching the house like hawks.

"Professor Arthur Whitmore, I presume," the man said smoothly, his voice devoid of any warmth. "My name is Marcus Vance, head of security and legal acquisitions for the Sterling Group. I believe you have two unauthorized guests inside your home."
