Chapter 2: The Ultrasound
Arturo entered the examination room wearing his flawless white coat and his practiced smile.
To everyone else, he looked like the perfect doctor.
To me, he looked like a coward.
"My beautiful wife," he said, kissing Mariana's forehead. "And my favorite mother-in-law."
I smiled back.
The kind of smile that reveals absolutely nothing.
Mariana lay on the examination table while the ultrasound technician prepared the machine.
Arturo stood beside her, one hand resting possessively on her shoulder.
The monitor flickered to life.
A heartbeat filled the room.
Strong.
Steady.
My granddaughter.
For a moment, Mariana's eyes softened.
Then Arturo leaned close enough that only she could hear.
"You've been crying," he whispered.
Mariana stiffened.
"I told you not to upset yourself before the surgery."
I watched every movement.
Every glance.
Every threat hidden behind his perfect smile.
Then my phone vibrated.
The message I had been waiting for finally appeared.
TRANSFER OF CONTROL CONFIRMED.
I looked up.
Arturo was still smiling for the staff.
He had no idea that five minutes earlier, every executive privilege attached to his position had been revoked.
Every access code.
Every financial authorization.
Every administrative power.
Gone.
The clinic no longer belonged to him.
It never truly had.
It belonged to the family foundation.
And I controlled the foundation.
"Doctor Sandoval," I said calmly.
He turned toward me.
"Yes?"
"We need to talk."
For the first time all morning, his smile faltered.
