Chapter 5 - The Fall of the House of Cole

The arrest was swift, clinical, and entirely public.

As two federal marshals grabbed Daniel’s arms and slammed him hard against the hood of his own luxury sedan, he didn't look like an untouchable real estate tycoon anymore. He looked like a cornered rat, screaming obscenities, thrashing against the cuffs, and frantically looking at Vanessa as if she were going to save him.

"Vanessa! Tell them! Tell them it was her idea! You wanted the money!" Daniel screamed, spittle flying from his lips as they forced him into the back of the cruiser.

Vanessa was already being cuffed by a second detective, sobbing hysterically as her pearl necklace broke, scattering white beads across the damp cemetery grass like fallen teeth.

The mourners began scattering like ants, desperate to distance themselves from the catastrophic collapse of the Cole family empire. Within ten minutes, the only people left standing by the twin graves were my mother, Marcus Vance, and me.

Marcus walked over, handing me a clean handkerchief and a sealed manila folder.

"The federal asset seizure warrants have already been executed," Marcus said quietly, his dark eyes filled with profound sympathy and respect. "Every corporate account, offshore holding, and real estate asset owned by Daniel and his associates has been frozen by the U.S. District Court. By tomorrow morning, he won't even be able to afford a public defender without court clearance."

"Thank you, Marcus," I replied, my voice steady as I wiped a speck of dust from my coat sleeve.

"Are you going to be alright, sweetheart?" my mother asked, stepping forward and pulling me into a fierce, tearful embrace. "You don't have to stay here anymore. Come home with me."

"Not yet, Mom," I whispered, gently pulling away and turning back toward the two white caskets. "I have one more thing to do."

The cemetery workers, looking profoundly uncomfortable, stood a few yards away, waiting for instructions.

"Lower them," I instructed softly.

The motorized pulleys whirred to life, and slowly, gently, Emma and Ethan’s caskets descended into the earth. The silver butterfly and the wooden airplane caught the last fading rays of sunlight before disappearing into the dark soil.

I bent down, scooped up a small handful of damp earth, and let it fall over the edge of the pit.

"Your father is going away for the rest of his natural life," I whispered down into the ground, my voice breaking just enough to let the deep, aching love for my children bleed through. "And every cent he stole, every building he bought with blood, will be repurposed in your names. You are avenged, my babies. Mommy made sure of it."
