Chapter 1

At his promotion gala, my husband called me “fat” in front of everyone and threw me out with our two babies. Hours later, all his cards stopped working.
“Get out of here, Valeria. With that body, you’re ruining my image.”
Rogelio didn’t even lower his voice.
He didn’t say it in the bedroom, during a private argument, or in one of those hallways where wounds stay trapped between four walls. He said it in the main lobby of the Imperial Reforma Hotel, in front of waiters, photographers, executives, and women wearing jewelry that sparkled brighter than their smiles.
Valeria stood near the ballroom entrance, a double stroller in front of her and her four-month-old twins fussing beneath a navy-blue blanket. She had chosen a wine-colored silk dress that still pressed against her C-section scar. Every step hurt, but she had come because Rogelio had spent weeks insisting that a wife should appear “when it was convenient.”
Only that night, when he looked at her, he didn’t see the woman who had spent two sleepless nights caring for fevers, the mother who had learned to carry two babies at once, or the person who had supported his career for years.
He saw an inconvenience.
“Rogelio, they’re your children,” she said, trying to keep her voice steady as one of the babies began to cry. “I couldn’t leave them alone.”
He smiled with the coldness he used whenever he wanted to humiliate someone without appearing violent.
“My children aren’t responsible for the fact that you let yourself go.”
A few steps away, Jimena, his personal assistant, let out a soft laugh. She wore a tight silver dress and held a champagne glass as though she were already the woman of the evening. Valeria knew that laugh. She had heard it over the phone, behind closed doors, in voice messages deleted too late.
Rogelio leaned closer to her.
“This gala is my final step to the top. Tonight the board is introducing me as CEO of Grupo Altavista. I’m not going to let you appear in photos looking like some exhausted housewife from the market.”
Valeria absorbed the blow in silence.
Grupo Altavista.
The company he bragged about as if it belonged to him.
The company that had given him drivers, credit cards, luxury apartments, vacations, and power.
The company that, in reality, belonged to Valeria through a trust fund Rogelio had never bothered to read.
No one in that ballroom knew. Only three members of the board knew the identity of the majority shareholder who had chosen to remain invisible after her father’s death. To everyone else, Valeria was simply a quiet wife. To Rogelio, she was a burden.
“Stay near the kitchen,” he ordered. “And if the babies cry, leave. Jimena will be standing with me when I go on stage.”
Valeria looked at Jimena.
“Her?”
Jimena stepped forward with a smile full of fake sympathy.
“Oh, Valeria, don’t take it personally. Rogelio needs someone who actually fits his new life.”
The words landed like a slap.
A photographer turned toward them when one of the babies cried again. Rogelio reacted immediately. His hand clamped around Valeria’s arm and shoved her toward a side hallway.
“Don’t embarrass me,” he hissed. “You’re swollen, exhausted, and desperate. You look pathetic.”
Valeria lowered her gaze to his fingers digging into her skin.
At another time, she would have cried.
At another time, she would have apologized.
Not tonight.
She gently pulled herself free, adjusted the blanket over her children, and slipped a hand into her purse. Her phone contained a message she had left unsent for three days, addressed to Arturo Salcedo, chairman of the board and an old friend of her father.
“If Rogelio crosses the final line, execute the transition protocol.”
Valeria looked at the brightly lit ballroom, listened to the applause, and watched Jimena straighten her husband’s tie as though she had already won something that had never belonged to her.
Rogelio smiled for the cameras once more.
“Leave, Valeria. Do it for your dignity, if you have any left.”
Then she pressed Send.
A single-word reply appeared on the screen:
“Confirmed.”
And as Rogelio walked into the ballroom arm in arm with his mistress, Valeria realized that no one at that gala was prepared for what had just begun.
