Chapter 6 — Mia's School Project

A few weeks later, Mia came home carrying a colorful poster board.

"Mom! Dad! I have homework!"

Thomas smiled.

"What kind?"

"My teacher asked us to draw our family tree."

She spread the paper across the dining table.

There were branches everywhere.

Instead of filling every branch with names, Mia drew hearts.

One heart for Thomas.

One for Emma.

One for Noah.

One for herself.

Her teacher had written a note in the corner:

Wonderful creativity.

Thomas smiled.

"But where's Grandma?"

Mia looked up thoughtfully.

"I didn't know where to put her."

Thomas knelt beside her.

"You don't have to put someone on your tree just because they're related."

Mia nodded.

"So family is the people who make you feel safe?"

"Exactly."

She picked up her crayons again.

Then she drew one large heart around the four of them.

"There."

"My whole family."

Thomas felt his eyes sting.

It was the simplest picture in the room.

And the most beautiful.
