Chapter 5 - The Unraveling

They led Eleanor out of the house in handcuffs, her screams echoing down the snowy driveway. The neighbors stood on their porches, their faces illuminated by the spinning red and blue police lights, watching the neighborhood’s beloved "pillar of charity" get shoved into the back of a squad car.

Derek sat on my living room sofa, his head in his hands.

"Clara... I didn't know," he muttered. "I thought she was just... overbearing. I didn't think she was capable of..."

"You didn't want to know, Derek," I said, standing by the window, watching the tail lights of the police cruiser disappear into the dark. "Because knowing would mean you’d have to admit that my family was broken. And you always preferred the lie."

Jade came over, wrapping an arm around my shoulders. "The police want you to come down to the station tomorrow morning to sign the formal complaint and provide a detailed statement. I'll watch Lucy. You don't have to do this alone."

"Thank you," I whispered.

That night, I didn't sleep. I lay in bed with Lucy, watching the rise and fall of her chest, listening to her quiet, even breathing. The backup EpiPen sat on the nightstand beside me, a small plastic soldier guarding her sleep.

Eleanor had money. She had influence. And she had spent a lifetime building a reputation as a saint.
