Chapter 6 - The Rebuilding of Aquila

Two weeks later, the corporate restructuring of Aquila Global Aviation was formally announced to the global aerospace community.
Instead of hiding behind the curtain of traditional corporate anonymity, Claire Mercer chose to step directly into the public spotlight. She held her first global press conference in the grand atrium of Aquila’s Seattle headquarters—the very room where her mother had once received international aviation awards.
Dressed in a sharp, tailored navy suit with no jewelry save for her mother’s gold signet ring on her right hand, Claire stood behind the mahogany podium before a sea of flashing camera lights and international journalists.
“For over forty years, Aquila Global Aviation has connected continents, transported critical supplies, and served as a pillar of global commerce,” Claire began, her voice carrying absolute command over the crowded hall. “Today, we announce a comprehensive modernization initiative designed to ensure our operations reflect the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and accountability.”
A journalist from the Wall Street Journal raised his hand immediately. “Ms. Mercer, following the federal indictment of your husband and the sudden dissolution of Holloway Capital, how will Aquila ensure that its corporate governance remains insulated from private conflicts of interest?”
Claire did not hesitate. Her dark eyes locked onto the reporter with unwavering focus.
“By establishing a zero-tolerance compliance framework across all subsidiaries and executive holdings,” Claire answered clearly. “True leadership requires transparency, and true partnership requires mutual respect. Moving forward, Aquila Global will not only maintain rigorous ethical standards internally, but we will also actively divest from any corporate entity found engaging in deceptive practices.”
The response was immediate. Financial analysts across the globe praised the decisive address, and Aquila’s stock surged by four percent within the hour following the broadcast.
Behind the scenes in the executive offices, Samuel Vance watched the live broadcast from his desk, a quiet, satisfied smile touching the corners of his mouth. Eleanor Mercer had spent decades building the physical empire of Aquila; her daughter was now building its unbreakable soul.
Later that afternoon, Claire sat in her mother’s former office, reviewing the revised logistics contracts for the upcoming fiscal year.
Her executive assistant, a sharp and efficient young woman named Maya, knocked softly on the open door and stepped inside.
“Ms. Mercer, there’s someone downstairs in the secure lobby asking to speak with you,” Maya said, hesitating slightly. “It’s... Miss Vanessa Reed.”
Claire paused, lifting her pen from the paper.
“She insists it’s urgent,” Maya continued. “She claims she has documentation regarding Holloway Capital’s hidden offshore accounts that the federal investigators missed.”

Claire looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows toward the grey expanse of Elliott Bay, where an Aquila cargo jet was currently lifting off into the afternoon clouds, cutting a clean, powerful arc through the sky.
“Send her up,” Claire said calmly.
